While the controversial split-decision stole headlines worldwide, the build to Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou wasn't enough to convince people to shell out the $79.99 for the bout.

According to recent reports, the bout, which resulted in a split-decision victory for Fury, would by far be one of the biggest busts when it comes to PPV purchases for U.S. residents.

Veteran wrestling & MMA journalist Dave Meltzer reported the first hard numbers we've seen in the latest Wrestling Observer and it's not good news for the financial side of this heavyweight showdown.

Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou sold approximately 56,000 buys on ESPN+ and around 11,500 on traditional television in the US.

If these numbers stand, the event will easily be the lowest number of buys either Fury or Ngannou have ever garnered when headlining a PPV event.

Dana White won.

Now that Ngannou has shown he can stand with Fury, the numbers would be much better for a rematch.

I've had to stop watching Chael Sonnen's youtube channel - I think he's made about 100 videos about this fight so far. Dude won't stop.

Let it go, Chael.

No shite. It was at 2 PM on a CFB Saturday. We don't watch boxing at that time of day. It's just weird.

Danis also promoted that fight into the mainstream.

Put on Francis vs Wilder/Joshua in Vegas at 9 pm with a Jake Paul Co-main against Jorge Masvidal and that fight would be huge.

But it doesn't matter. Saudis will come in and keep doing these one-offs and losing money and it won't matter. They just want the PR.

Should have been a Friday night fight. Why compete with arguably the most watched sport in the US?

PPV $79.99 for the bout.

Can't believe this is still a thing, especially at the price for a month of Cable or a flight to Vegas.

At least crazy Wrestling fans get actual scripted entertainment that tries to please at a fraction of the cost...what's boxing fans excuse for following this hucksters sport?

...but at the same time, nobody in combat sports is hotter and more discussed than Ngannou. The event may have bombed, but his career is on an upward trajectory.

Francis was never a draw in the UFC either. A lot of the anti-Dana nerds hate to hear that, but it’s a fact.

Even whenever they absolutely STACKED the card with other great fights, Francis at the top of the card never drew more than 200-350k PPV buys.

That’s approximately $16-28 million in revenue generated and Francis wanted them to pay him $10+ million of it…. delusional.

As someone else said, the early Saturdays start didn’t help. But also, I think people aren’t spending the way they were.
