As one of their last actions with their majority, Democrats quietly tucked a provision into internal House rules that grants lawmakers access to an optional $34,000 annual subsidy to pay for their Washington, D.C., housing and meal expenses. Taxpayers have doled out over $8,700 to pay for the democratic socialist's lodging and meals throughout the first half of 2023, records show.
In total, 113 Democrats and 104 Republicans have taken advantage of the program, raking in a combined $1.4 million from taxpayers during the first half of 2023, House disbursement records reviewed by the Washington Free Beacon show. Recipients of these funds include at least 17 millionaire Democrats, including Rep. Katie Porter, who reported a net worth of up to $1.8 million in her latest financial disclosure, and House Minority Whip Katherine Clark (D., Mass.), who boasts a net worth of up to $13.5 million.

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) has billed taxpayers over $14,000 for lodging and meals during the first half of 2023. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D., Mich.) has received $6,800 from taxpayers to pay for her lodging and meals.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.) received the largest share of funds out of any lawmaker. The Florida Republican, who led the effort to oust former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in part due to his budgetary policies, has billed taxpayers nearly $17,000 from January through May to pay for his D.C. living expenses. Gaetz received an additional $6,200 to pay for his meals during the same timeframe, an average of over $1,250 per month.

In a statement given to the Free Beacon, Gaetz said that he’s “complied with the law.”
“And my cooking is often with discount BOGO [Buy One, Get One] products. I try to do the best in the kitchen from the BOGO life,” he added.

Of course they are within the law. The law is problem though.

Can you name the one person in all of our country’s political history who didn’t take a government check or act like the tax payers were his personal piggy bank?
Need a hint?

$1250 a month for food is crazy, lol. That's more than the ladies we hate in groceries stores, pushing two baskets filled with steaks and toaster strudels.

Yeah.
The idea that we control govt through vote is pure myth. Its just a long line of psychopaths waiting their turn.

I know how lobbying works ... no Congressman is actually paying for their own food.

Yea, but lobbyist money is a longer way around to taxpayer money. They should at least have the decency to take the scenic route.

Already a red flag that this is going to be one of "those" posts.
That being said, it's easy to mock all this and say it's grift.
Who here, though, lives in one place and travels to a work office somewhere else, and is expected to cover the costs of being there? Do we realistically expect them to maintain two homes to do this job?
Sure, some actually sleep in their office. Is that really the answer?
How about we just build them a dorm or pay a per diem?

I get it. The problem is they create their own stipend.

They have zero hesitance in using your hard-earned tax dollars to enrich themselves. Never mind that they would jail you in a heartbeat if you refused to grant them prima nocte to your earnings.
They feel they're entitled to these benefits.
frick every last one of them.

They're all on obozocare too, right?

We the people would be money ahead to build a secure dorm/apartment building for these leeches to live in while they're in DC.
Of course, this begs the question - do they need to spend so much time in Washington that they need to maintain two residences? What do they do in person (that's above board), that they can't do via telework?

Fine. Set up another mechanism for that.
Let's not pretend, though, that asking to have legitimate expenses means you are "Living High on Welfare".

Sorry. $34k per year is welfare.

Retired radio host Neal Boortz had an amazing suggestion for a Constitutional amendment - He wanted an amendment stating that Congress may pass no law to which they grant themselves an exemption. This came at the height of the Obamacare debacle, and serves as a perfect example of these parasites' hypocrisy. If the AFA was so great, then why didn't it become the default health plan for Congress?

Let's not pretend they are forced to be there. They chose this job. It's not like they had a normal job and were forced into moving to another city for work. They make $174k that we know of. Yeah, I think they can cover their own expenses.

How about they just stay home and vote via Zoom?
There's no need for a full time in-person Congress anymore.

Last thing a state rep wants is to be home near his/her constituents.
