All this to be said, I don't think there should be helmet laws (or seatbelt laws). Your choice.
So long as you're not in my car. I won't have your head knocking into mine at 50 mph because you weren't wearing a seatbelt.

You should be looking out for the best interests of your child.
A scraped knee and a fricked up head are two very different things.

Yeah that's different also from a liability perspective. My car my rules. Your car, you do you

No. They're in $300 car seats
Car seats are for lib sissies. I let my kids play with my smokes in the front seat while I drive 90mph on I-55. You gonna wrap your kids in bubble wrap too?

Remember when it was nerdy and "gay" to wear helmets skiing and snowboarding and now you'll get shamed off the mountain if you don't?
Good times, good times.
Good times, good times.

the chances of a serious head injury from a bike fall are negligibly small.
I've personally had 2 accidents on a bike as an adult. This was riding road bikes while training for triathlon, so not exactly the same as kids playing, but still. One was in a situation you'd only get traveling at racing speeds and I think most would agree you need to be wearing a helmet. I actually didn't hit my head that time. The other was traveling way slower than most kids ride their bikes. Was actually pulling back into a parking lot after a ride. Tire slipped out on a slippery liquid in a turn and my head hit the concrete very hard. Had a mild concussion. That smaller incident made me realize just how easy it is to have a serious head injury. I'll always suggest for my kids to wear one.

No ma'am. Just gonna put them in a car seat like a normal person.

Helmet, hell. We didn’t even always wear shoes.

On one such trip I was outside waiting for her and she had not made it around the block in the amount of time it usually took her to do so. I started walking over to the the other side of the block and saw her slowly riding down the street...with a bloody knee and a scrape on her hand. She had fallen off the bike. The dad in me wanted to scoop her up and carry her home to clean up her scrapes. But when she got to me I could tell that she desperately wanted to cry, but was absolutely refusing to do so. She had fallen and hurt herself. But she was not going to let anyone see her cry. So she picked herself up and rode home, even though she was hurt. It sounds strange, but in that moment I was so proud of her for being tough. Many kids her age probably would have been covered from head to toe in pads, yet still would lay in the road frantically crying for any adult to come help them. She didn't. She learned that day that sometime things are going to happen where you get hurt and you can't just lay there and cry. You have to fight through the hurt and keep going.
Good story and a great memory of a proud papa moment.

I used to not wear a seatbelt in the rear facing 3rd row of the station wagon every day.

absolutely. they're cheap, easy, and light. No reason not to. Plus, my kids are daredevils so they wear them.

my boys ride bmx bikes and ride just around the neighborhood. They do not wear helments....trying not to raise pussies. If they were riding a rode bike in a race, thats different. Trail riding...again different
but just around the neighborhood....yea that would be stupid imo
this was a big fight in my neighborhood. My mother in law lives with us and she adamantly disagreed with me. My wife was kind of neutral on it. Wife thinks...prolly a good idea but really nerdy. MIL is over protective....i simply told her i was trying to raise strong boys who become strong men. She finally backed off.

We made our children wear one for a few months when they first learned to ride their bike. After they had mastered it we didnt ask them to do so.
I had a neighbor whose 6 year old crashed their bike and the childs head his a concrete gutter and almost killed them. He was in ICU for about 10 days but thankfully recovered.

Do your kids wear a helmet when riding their bike?
Did/do you wear a helmet when on a pedal bike?
Kids? Yes
My kids are both 12, they bike probably around 1.5 miles to school, we give them a lot of freedom to bike around, crossing roads, etc. But they do have to wear a helmet.
On the very first day of school this year a couple of months ago, a kid was struck by a car at the exact crosswalk my kids use to cross the road to get to their school. That kid died, so yea, they're still going to wear helmets as long as they're biking around especially when going longer distances and crossing roads.
I probably don't care as much if they do/don't wear it to go to their friends' houses that are on our same street and just down the street or whatever, but they're just conditioned to put on the helmet to get on the bike so that just works even better.

For the first, almost year, he started riding a bike the ole lady hounded me to make sure he wore a helmet. When I saw that he got more comfortable riding, I told him he didn't have to wear it

I never did on bicycles, but I did on motorcycles. An old quote from Cycle World Mag...if you have a 10 dollar head wear a 10 dollar helmet.

to me there is a distinction....
are you doing one of the following, then wear a helmet
1) road or mountain biking
2) crossing busy roads
3) performing stunts
if you are simply riding around the neighborhood or subdivision where cars do not go over 15 and you are mainly riding side walk.....yea you look like an idiot wearing a helment.

Most neighborhood speed limits are 20. I bet people are going at least 25 and distracted by something. Bicycles do not belong on the sidewalk.
