Pretty Hate Machine-

Nine Inch Nails debut album released was on October 20, 1989

Pretty Hate Machine

Terrible Lie
Incredible Performance

This album came before grunge hit big and is still very relevant to this day. Was not only able to survive the Grunge era but outlasted it in a way.
I think Trent Reznor is one of the most talented musicians in the industry.
Nine Inch Nails has a very unique and distinctive sound. I feel like no one has ever sounded like them in the industrial genre.
They are the best IMO
I listen to them almost everyday.
Something I Can Never Have
Heart wrenching and Beautiful Song

Awesome album and probably my favorite band (yeah it’s really just Trent) of all time. If you haven’t seen them live, do. It’s never old, dated, or boring. I could see them repeatedly and not get tired or bored. The music stands the test of time. As good music should.

Strong debut, but I have a soft spot for Broken.

Something I Can Never Have is an incredible song. Gonna have to fire it up for the drive home tonight.

All of his albums are great, but Pretty Hate Machine is special to me. This album helped me get through eighth grade. I enjoy the later albums as well and he’s still relevant today. The Watchmen soundtrack is awesome!

Saw them open for The Jesus and Mary Chain in February 1990 at Tipitinas. A few months later they played a warm up at Tipitinas for $1.

Thus was his best album, raw stripped down.

My moral standing is lying down
Nothing quite like the feel of something new

Great album. When started singing about fricking like an animal, I quit listening.

I was obsessed with Pretty Hate Machine in high school and also listened to his next two albums constantly (though I thought he went too far in the song "Big Man with a Gun," even though I understood what he was trying to do there).

I remember talking to someone on the school bus a day or two after Downward Spiral was released. (I'd immediately bought it on cassette from Paradise Records near LSU.) I said I thought it might even be better than Pretty Hate Machine. Some other kid overheard me and interrupted to say something like nothing will ever top Pretty Hate Machine.

I was 12 or 13 when my sister gave me a mix tape she got at a party. Basically the DJ taped his set and was handing out copies to the crowd.

It had some great songs on there. The few that I remember:

Paid in Full by Eric B. & Rakim

Nemesis by Shriekback

Hey Poor by Front 242

Tic Tac Toe by Kyper

But there was one song that caught my attention. I asked my sister what it was, but she had no idea. I played that song daily for like a month.

Months later, a friend was playing Pretty Hate Machine, and I heard the song. It was Down In It. Once I found out who the band was, I immediately bought album.

It’s crazy to think of the ways we discover new music back then. So easy these days. Sounds like a great mixed tape.
