Robert Smalls - Robert Smalls did something unimaginable: In the midst of the Civil War, this black male slave commandeered a Confederate ship and delivered its 16 black men, women and children passengers from slavery to freedom. From slave to sailor to Congressman, read on for more about this extraordinary person.

His story reminds me of a line from the movie "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" when the newspaper editor, after hearing the true story from Senator Rance Stoddard about how Liberty Valance was killed-----he said, "When the legend becomes the truth, print the legend".

Awesome analogy.
Best books for Custer IMHO

The Custer Myth
G.A. Graham

Custers Trials
J.T. Stiles

You won't find a better two books.

George Washington would be interesting because for most of the revolution he’s sorta losing a lot and the reason he’s the man is that he’s able to keep this army together after a lot of loses.

Since I was a teenager I have hoped to see a film -- or even better, a miniseries -- of Gore Vidal's Creation, in which both the above are characters, as well as Buddha, Confucius, & Zoroaster!

The Revolution was saved b/c of victory at Saratoga in 1777, which was won by one steadfast general, w/o whom there would be no USA:

Benedict Arnold

(No I am not kidding. There is a monument to him at the battlefield)

There was a terrible MGM movie in the 50s (where Arnold was a minor character). I'd love to see a miniseries of Flexner's The Traitor & The Spy.

The TV movie w/Selleck isn't bad

The late 70s miniseries weirdly has Duvall play him in his loud bull-in-a-china-shop style, which I doubt the real Ike was like

Miyamoto MusashI-World’s greatest swordsman. Won his 1st dual at 13 and proceeded to defeat every master swordsman in Japan.

Agree with Washington and Luther.

Has there ever been a biopic of Mary Todd Lincoln, told only from her POV? We would only see Abe if she saw him.

It would offer a very juicy role for an actress -- say, Reese -- and has an obvious 3 part, 6 hr miniseries structure: Pre War, War, & Post War, when she went nuts.

My answer was going to be Boudica, but I couldn’t remember how to spell it, so I went to Google to double check…

And sure enough, Boudica: Queen of War is scheduled to come out October 27th of this year lol

Boudica kind of got her arse kicked though. Her superior force was crushed at Watling Street. Plus, she was only leader because her king husband had died.

Claire Chennault would be a good one.

he appears briefly in the Baa Baa Black Sheep pilot, confronting Boyington

Interestingly, he is portrayed rather negatively -- I presume to make Boyington look good

They did an AMC movie about her and other female spies from WWII. But she was an absolute badass. She was the most highly decorated female civilian during WWII. Would love to see a story about her get the Spielberg/Hanks treatment.

Ching Shih

quote:

Ching Shih was anything but your standard pirate. For starters, she was a woman, a former sex worker who married into the pirate life but turned out to be really, really good at piracy.

She was born as Shi Yang into a Tanka family, a people who lived and worked on junks (a kind of Chinese sailing ship) along the coast of China. As a young woman, she worked in the brothels, gambling houses and boats of Guangdong.

At the height of her power, she commanded 400 ships with an estimated 40,000 to 80,000 men and was capable of taking on any maritime force in the region.
