Davis Polk & Wardwell on Tuesday rescinded job offers to law students who signed on to public statements supporting Palestine in the wake of Hamas’ deadly attacks in Israel, following a similar move by Winston & Strawn last week.
Davis Polk managing partner Neil Barr said in a Tuesday email to members of the firm, obtained by Reuters, that it had revoked job offers to three law students in leadership positions at Harvard and Columbia university groups that issued statements regarding to the latest wave of violence in the Middle East.
“These statements are simply contrary to our firm’s values and we thus concluded that rescinding these offers was appropriate in upholding our responsibility to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all Davis Polk employees,” Barr wrote.
A Davis Polk spokesperson on Tuesday declined to identify the students whose offers had been rescinded or what campus groups they were with.
Barr’s email said the firm is remaining “in dialogue” with two of the students to consider any additional information they may offer, suggesting that they could be brought back on board.
Spokespeople from both Harvard law and Columbia law declined to comment on the matter Tuesday.
Davis Polk’s decision comes one week after Winston & Strawn said it had rescinded a job offer to former New York University Student Bar Association president Ryna Workman, after Workman wrote that "Israel bears full responsibility" for Hamas’ deadly attack in Israel in an online SBA newsletter.

The statements those students signed blamed Israel entirely for the terrorism.

Cancel culture and doxxing sure was fun… till it wasn’t fun anymore.

Love to see them eat their own.

Wow. That's good to see. I am not familiar with either law firm but suppose both are highly successful and powerful law firms that love this country. We need more of this.
I bet those students are crying and don't get it. Programmed by the leftist college professors.

I’m not a fan of doxxing and cancel culture.
But it’s funny seeing the indignant whining when it’s their side, they cheered it on when it was conservatives, Trump supporters, and those questioning the Covid narrative.

This isn't really doxxing... The students openly signed their names to a document that demonstrates they might not possess good judgement...

These idiots signed their name to a document and thought they would be hiding behind the organization in question and Harvard to avoid consequences.
They chose… poorly.

What do you think about your fellow leftists facing such consequences?

Oh, I agree and this certainly was not them hiding behind a screen name making comments on a message board...
Their openly putting their names on something like this causes problems for anyone that hire them, especially a law firm...

Same thing I say when conservatives face such consequences.

What about their Free Speech values? Do not get me wrong, I think they should be sent over there to fight with Gaza.
However, I believe they have a 1st Amendment right to say what they want to say without recourse.

I mean they won't be jailed, but just as we all should have the right to speak out, so should a business have the right to hire or fire, or in this case rescind offers.
Businesses do background checks on your social media among other things. Unfortunately one must be cognizant of what they say. Politicians and judge candidates get scrutinized over things they have said or written. Consequences, good or bad, do not take a back seat merely because you were execising your rights.

freedom of speech does not mean freedom from repercussion. you cant just say whatever you want with immunity from private citizens.
Posted on 10/18/23 at 9:09 am to CAPEX
Gee, a company that requires that their employees don’t approve of the mass kidnapping and murder of civilians ? Wow that’s crazy. Next thing you know they’ll frown on hiring employees who promote cannibalism. .
Progress.
Progress.

The first amendment is for government protection. Not private. No more than you can walk up to a person, call him a bitch, and then yell first Amendment at them while they are beating your arse.
