Lifelong New Orleans resident trying to celebrate a big life moment. Wife and I want to try a new fancy restaurant. We usually go to Ruth’s on Fulton but want to try something new. Staying away from Bourbon area.

My favorite place for a celebration is Galatoire’s but since you don’t want to go to Bourbon Street, my second favorite is Commander’s Palace.

Patois, Clancy, Herbsaint, Coquette, August for traditional nicer places.
Lilette, La Petite, Costera, Gautreau's, Apolline, Bistro Daisy for close enough.

Friend,
Perhaps you will want to refer to my good friend, Brett Anderson’s, recent top 25 restaurants in NOLA list in the NYT:
Brennan’s
Brigtsen’s
Bywater American Bistro
Cafe Reconcile
Cane & Table
Charlie’s Steakhouse
Chicken’s Kitchen
Clancy’s
Cochon
Commander’s Palace
Dakar
Dooky Chase
Hungry Eyes
Liuzza’s by the Track
MaMou
Mawi Tortillas
Mosca’s
Palladar 511
Peche
Queen Trini Lisa
Saba Saffron
Saint Germain
Secret Thai
Tan Dinh
On second thought, rather than look at his favorite 25 restaurants, it would be nice if he scored restaurants objectively. Some head scratchers on that list: Mosca’s, Tan Dinh, Dooky Chase, Liuzza’s by the Track, Cafe Reconcile are all above average restaurants, but if any of these is a legitimate top 25 restaurant in the city we need to re-evaluate our city as a major dining city. In reality, none of these is on a well considered top 25 list. How desperate the city is for Tom Fitzmorris who knew the city’s dining scene so well.
My recommendations would include Criollo, Clancy’s, Commander’s, Daisy Bistro, Desi Vega, Coquette, August, GW Fin, Doris Metro, Station 6, Shogun, and Impastato’s.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

I showed up in Pensacola with wine and cheese but y'all did not answer the door, very disappointing

Friend,
Next time just bring cheese and the door will be answered if we are there. Which building are y’all in? Uncle has been petitioning for his building to be a dry building. Unsuccessful so far, we have hope yet. Next time we are all there, we should make the drive to the Shell gas station by the University of West Florida. There is a taqueria there called El Asador that served us last week the best tacos I have ever had. That includes better than anything I’ve had in Houston, Piedras Negras, Laredo, and Tijuana.
Yours,
TulaneLSU

I will try again , maybe, but I was pretty disappointed. I felt s semblance of patriarchy and needed to leave the area.

Of these I’ve only been to GW Fin, Clancy’s and August (when John Besch was over it).
We really enjoyed Clancy’s… not downtown and if you go, ask for a table upstairs as there is wine kept in the smaller rooms, leading it to be a cozy and intimate setting.

Friend,
Brennan's being at the top of this list makes me not able to take the rest seriously...

Are you looking for a fancy restaurant or just another steakhouse?

Not sure, but I'm surprised this news didn't get posted here. It was about 10 days ago I think.

Yikes
If you want to go really big, the best restaurant in the city is Saint Germain right now, and it is really not even close, I'm not sure I can even stress that. However, it is in the Bywater so it is not as formal as some other places. High price, CRAZY quality tasting menu (it would have michelin stars in a big city), fairly informal atmosphere, good service. However, I am not recommending this since your go to is Ruth's Chris. This might be too...out there for you, and I do not mean that to be insulting at all.
Doris Metropolitan for a MUCH better steakhouse than Ruth's.
Revolution and August for white table cloth (although I have heard August has slipped these days)
MaMou is beautiful and killing it these days.
Coquette and Lilette are always great. Lilette is up there for my favorites in the entire city and so underrated, when they have a bunch of specials I want them all.
Osteria Lupo is also doing well and their Feed Me/tasting is a great value.
