re: How much do you spend on your loyal companion each year?

If mine was only 2k a year, that would be really cheap.

This year I got two more puppies to add to my 15 year old lab mix. My lab mix eats food that costs me about 25 a week so 1300 a year on his food alone.

My two puppies eat 70 every two weeks so that is another 1800 a year.

Interceptor is about 20 a month I think so another 240 a year.

Treats are probably another 4-500 a year.

I bought a pro set of clippers, scissors, and combs for the two puppies so I can groom them and spent around 600 total on all of that.

I would say that I spend 4k a year pretty easy on my dogs plus the work of grooming them monthly and the cost of investing in that gear.

My step dad had a scarlet macaw back when I was growing up. He was awesome, they typically aren’t the best talkers but this one knew all kinds of stuff. He was mean as shite though. Me, mom and step dad were the only ones he liked, every one else was told to give him room or get bit

The first small dog we've ever had, others have been hunting breeds, Labs & Goldens and my best, an Irish Setter who lived to 16 years old.

Took him in for what was to be a few months while friends adapted to their first child, now 14 years ago. Unusual for little dogs, he loves kids and will put up with pulled ears and eye pokes until he's had enough and barks once or twice loudly while moving away. Never bites or nips.

In June thought he had doggie dementia, turns out he was almost blind, thus why staring at walls inches away and acting strange. He's got a small brain tumor, now totally blind, almost deaf, Cushing's disease, a failing heart and kidneys, needs prescription foods and meds. Between ultra sound scans and blood tests at $600 a pop, vet bills are more than human ones.

The Chinese call Shi Tzu's lion dogs, he's not afraid of anything. They're mostly loyal to one person and that's me. Told the vet whatever it took to keep him comfortable was fine cost wise. He still loves to eat and get treats, sleeps a lot more but is happy. I carry him outside and back so he doesn't hurt himself trying to find his way.

I'll do what it takes to keep him comfortable but not prolong his life just because I hate to lose him. It will be deeply painful when the time comes, even though I've been through it with other great dogs.

Duffy has been one of the best and we'll make sure his remaining time with us, however long or short, is as good as possible. I will be with him to the very end.



That really isn't the question the OP asked, but is what came to mind as I thought about it.

At least that much, and mire when they get older. Worth it.

We spend $2000/year just on a shot she needs every month. Add in food, annuals, the something’s gonna go wrong at least a few times a year costs and it’s for sure $3000 a year.

I didn’t even factor in the amount we pay to have someone come house/dog sit when we go. We only do that because of the dog. It’s ridiculous but she’s worth every penny.

Budget $350/month average includes food, 2x year preventive blood work, fecal, vector screen and UA, dental. One golden. One black lab.
