Such a list is virtually impossible.
The factors are so varied and subjective. And the musical categories are diverse.
My personal favorite in the rock idiom is Jeff Beck, but that’s me.

Woof.
I mean he certainly is an accomplished player and pushed the boundaries of what can be done with a guitar. But in no way is he better than David fraking Gilmour.

No Roy Clark or Glen Campbell?

Did Taylor Swift make the cut?

Morello being that high is hilarious. Top 25 isn't bad as a group but I think you could shuffle a bunch. Frusciante should be higher for sure.

Tipton/Downing and Gossard/McCready were listed as single entries. Others likely were too, but I was scrolling too fast. What a joke!
Lmao!
Can someone more patient than me let me know if Warren DiMartini, Elliot Easton, Collins, Rossington, Ed King, Dicky Betts, Mick Mars or Toy Caldwell made the list?

Clapton was dropped simply because he's an anti vaxer and more conservative recently.

I've only made it from 250 to 100 so far (whoever said a rolling stone gathers no moss has never loaded an article from their website with 250 photos in it). I like Chrissie Hynde as a singer and songwriter but putting her higher than Steve Lukather and Mike Campbell as a guitarist is pure baloney.
And yes you can tell it is a Rolling Stone list by the number of women and African musicians the average, or even above average, American music fan has never heard of is on this list.

Continuing on, it only gets worse. Putting Mark Knopfler at 96 on an all time greatest guitarist list is like putting Joe Montana at 96 on an all time greatest quarterback list, especially when you have Kurt Cobain at 88 and Joan Jett at 76.
Eric Clapton and Jerry Garcia at 35 and 34 and Jack White at 32?
Now we have David Gilmour at 28, Buddy Guy at 27, Albert King at 22, Randy Rhodes at 21, and Stevie Ray Vaughan at 20. This just screams that there is going to be three or four absolutely ridiculous choices ranked somewhere in the top 19 ahead of them.
Yep, there it is, Tom Morello at 18. We can't even leave politics out of a greatest guitarist list can we Rolling Stone? Also putting Keith Richards at 15 on a list of the coolest guitarists of all time would be too low of a ranking but putting him at 15 on a list of best guitarists of all time is way too high. Before 1975 he wasn't even the best guitarist in his band.
Tony Iommi one spot higher than Prince?
Carlos Santana at 11, Duane Allman at 10, and Joni Mitchell at 9. Guarantee the career could have been exactly the same but if the name was Joe Mitchell instead of Joni Mitchell she would be about seventy spots lower on the list.
I like Nile Rodgers but he has no business being anywhere near number seven on this list. Maybe seventh best producer of all time but not seventh best guitarist.
No Roy Buchanon, Danny Gatton, Tom Schultz or (the biggest omission of all) Jeff Healey. This list is so bad I am surprised the Denver Broncos haven't traded a first round draft pick for it.

I wish I had the discipline to do this. The list isn't even worthy of criticism and it's a very subjective list to begin with. Just pathetic.

Reading the top 25 and reading this told me everything I need to know about this list. That's a terrible list.

We can all rip this list to pieces because it is complete shite. But Jerry Reed at 198, give me a fricking break.
