Before Wilson went to the Broncos I think a lot of people thought he'd make the HOF now it's unlikely. I can't think of another player with a bigger drop off in production that's healthy.

He'd be the first QB with 300+ TD passes and a Super Bowl victory to not make the HOF. He's a lock.

Dalvin Cook comes to mind.

IMO he's playing well enough to remain starter in Denver. Payton is fairly loyal to QB's and by all accounts Russ puts in the time and effort, and Payton will appreciate that. There's no better options this season for Denver.

Let's say the Broncos draft a QB in the top 5 next spring. I'd assume that Russ would still be the starter next year in that case. The rest of this season and most of next season would allow him to compile an additional ~5,000 yards passing, ~25 TD passes, and an additional ~250 yards rushing.

Then he would probably be released and might have one or two more "Phillip Rivers in Indy" type of seasons somewhere else, netting him another 5K yards and 25 more TD's.

A touching retirement ceremony in Seattle and a mea culpa about his weird eccentricities would help his PR.

I say he makes it.

just because you are good in 2023 does not mean you will end up being a HOF.

I'll use the same sentiment Prime used a few years back...they crown ppl way too easy now to get that, they dont deserve it. Put more respect on that.

What about if you were good to elite from 2012 to 2022 and then were bad in 2023?

He's not having a bad season at all.

Good job OP, I've been thinking about this too.

If Russ has any kind of success the rest of his career, he gets in. But, if the rest of his career looks like the last two seasons, I think the electors will make it more difficult. The horrendously called pass that cost him a second ring? The lackluster support of teammates past and present? The drop-off when the Legion of Boom disbanded?

Writers may come up with more reasons not to elect him than to elect him. It will be interesting, and two years ago, he seemed an easy 1st ballot pick. I think he eventually gets in based on the ring and 9 pro bowls (although pro bowls aren't that hard to make since many decide not to play). He only has one 2nd team all-pro.

As for other big drop-offs, I think Leveon Bell was on his way to the Hall, left the Steelers, and pretty much non factor since.

Yes. Kurt Warner lowered the bar for modern nfl QBs. If he got in, Wilson will.

400td is the new 300. But they haven’t adjusted yet

Game managers should not be in the HOF.

Wilson was not the MVP of the Super Bowl he won b/c the defense and running game carried Seattle that entire season like they did in that game. Wilson, by himself, cost Seattle a Super Bowl, that most starters that year would have won.

How about Matt Ryan, HOF worthy??? I don’t think so either.

Total passing yards:

Ryan= 62,792
Wilson= 41,800

Passing Touchdowns:

Ryan= 381
Wilson= 320

Now compare HOF player Lynn Swan’s stats to every good wide receiver that is not in the HOF.

Time to let everybody in.

That's not true at all, and Wilson put the ball exactly where it was meant to go. It was just a fantastic read and play the the NE CB.

Also, in the NFCCG versus the Rams, Drew had a similar pass play to MT13 that would have sealed the game before OT. A simple 3 yard slant that would have either been a TD or first and goal from the 2 or the 1. Then kneel and kick with :03 left. MT was very open. Drew somehow threw it into the ground. MT13 still catches that 67% of the time, but he missed it this time, and the rest is history. That was the most tragic single play in Saints history. A throw that they hit 95% of the time.

Will and should are different questions

Only 1 second-team All-Pro bid should be a disqualifier

Not being in the top tier of your position over your playing days as a whole should also be an obvious disqualifier

Tier 1
Brady
Manning
Brees
Rodgers

Tier 2
Roethlisberger
Ryan
Rivers
Wilson
Eli

If you’re not one of the greats when you played I don’t see how you deserve to be one of the greats of all time

Was literally coming to post this.

Warner had a DOGSHIT middle of his career and got in.

Eli also was shitty as frick for many years and will get in and shouldn't.

This doesn't mean what you think it means in today's era.

Matt Ryan has 381
Stafford 338

Joe Montana has 273
Elway has 300

He would’ve made the HoF for his 10 year career in Seattle. Made the playoffs pretty much every year averaging nearly 11 wins a season. He averaged 30 TDs a game and had a QBrating above 100 and hasn’t been as terrible as their record indicates in Denver either.

Definitely glad the Saints didn’t wind up with him though like so many fans were hoping for.

Same for Kurt Warner. Let’s compare Super Bowl seasons.

2000 Kurt Warner= 41 TD and 13 Int, 4,353 passing yards.
2014 Russel Wilson= 20 TD and 7 Int, 3,400 passing yards.

2014, Seattle was the number 1 rushing team in the NFL.
2014, Seattle had the number 1 ranked defense in the NFL.

How many quarterbacks in 2014 would have won the Super Bowl with that loaded Seattle team?

Kurt Warner carried his team on his back to a Super Bowl win.
Seattle carried Wilson to a Super Bowl win.
