Why don't you post the 4 years before that too. Pretty sure he was top 15 the 4 years before. Phat Phil screwed him over in recruiting. All Phat Phil wanted to do was recruit donut shops to knoxville.

Phat Phil made him fall to 70th in overall Defense(Worse than LSU's D this year) despite bringing in top 20 classes in nearly every year. Sure.

Also anyone who brings up the LSU has more talent argument needs to be punched in the vag.

I would consider this a positive if he had the best defense in the conference year-in year-out. Seems like opposing coaches would already have a set playbook to beat him. I don't claim to follow Tennessee football closely enough to critique the guy, but their defense never really struck me as unpredictable and well disguised.

Can you summarize Chavis's style? I don't know much about him.

He will think outside the box (sometimes to his detriment - SECCG 2001). He is excellent at developing LBs and Safeties (pretty good at DL as well). His schemes are typically more based on fundamentals than gimmics (initial statement still applies). The spread is a bit of an issue as it is the modern offense, but, in the end, fundamentals are the best way to defend it. His pass defense is largely contingent on the talent level. When he doesn't have as much talent as he'd like, he does play a bit soft (we all hate that idea).

His biggest talent is his ability to diagnose what the opponent does. His defense SCHEMES are usually very solid. Blitzing isn't overdone and typically well thought out (and HIDDEN).

These are just very general observations. He is not a riverboat gambler, but more of a steady hand. While his defenses aren't typically stiffling (with moderate talent), they are dependable and consistent. With experience and a few stars, his schemes are very effective.

this guy has been tenn's DC since 96 and in that time he has never had a D rank in the top 5 in both total D and scoring D, hell he's never had any single D rank higher than 7 in scoring. 2 of pelini's 3 D's at LSU were top 5 in both categories. if LSU fans didn't like pelini everyone is going to hate this guy

Good observations and if we can get a really good Defensive coordinator with energy to coach up the D line, I think LSU would really benefit from this.

So Hiyoka...make a suggestion for the DC and convince Miles and Co, since they are "active posters", as to why he should be hired.

I would kill to get Orgeron in for DL coach. This defense needs some.....uh, motivation. And, his recruiting skills are outstanding.

I know the rumor is going around but I just can't believe this would happen. With the past rumors and the fact that he is coaching in the NFL, I just can't see it. I would love it though. Could you imagine what he would have done to Johnson or Alem at the Arkansas game.

Talking about Orgeron, I've been wondering what makes him so good at recruiting.

I mean do most HS kids get excited talking to an old cajun guy who can barely speak English?

I talked to a former Vol DB this weekend. Said that a hallmark of a Chavis defense if FAST linebackers. He often took "tweeners" (ie, big, fast safeties) and converted them to linebackers.

He was very complimentary of Chavis...said that we would be getting the real deal if we got him.

For the last time Chicken, Chad Jones is not going to be a linebacker.

Yes Chavis loves the fast linebackers. Kevin Burnett, Jarod Mayo come to mind. I could see moving Harry Coleman to one of the outside backer spots. He can't cover WR but maybe he can hit like the dickens.

Al Wilson is an example of a safety converted to LB...I think that worked out well for him.

Wasn't Urlacher a converted safety?

I've said it before, and I'll say it again......

Chavis does not recruit.

The 2001 UT defense had Albert Haynesworth, and John Henderson.

They lost to the QB-Draw of Freshman Matt Mauck and the LSU Tigers.

No thanks.
