Good point, it’s why Kelly’s “we’re a year away” comments are annoying. Offensive line seems to be fine, why is the defense a year away but offensive line was good last year and this year? Coaching and recruiting is the reason.

Brad Davis has been a great hire and we should do everything we can do not to lose him.

Honestly, keeping the entire offensive staff should probably be a priority.

Defensive staff however……

BK is just making excuses. We have the talent on defense to compete for a national title with this offense. Period

We have more experience this year than last, and may lose our best players this offseason.

This team is underperforming.

Let's see... Everyone on the line started last year in the same system. We also have very talented individuals on this line and not a bunch of transfers!

Brad Davis also realizes who his best players are and figures out a way to get them on the field early in the year. He tinkered with Dellinger at C last year, moved off immediately when it didn’t work. Campbell starting at LT over Wire week 1, Emery Jones starting mid year.

Is this a real question? If so, time to take up a new hobby!

No need for sarcasm.

The problem with the defense this year is mostly in the secondary. There’s an entire new group back there.

The most disappointing are Smith and Perkins. We used Perkins out of position game one, but he’s been moved back to that rush linebacker spot and hasn’t produced nearly as much.

I thought smith would show improvement week to week after coming back from injury, but he’s been a major disappointment as well.

Savion jones is too slow to contain the edge, which ole miss exposed over and over again.

Speights has been slow, while Penn has been hot and cold.

Whit Weeks is our best backer.

Overall, we’re having front 7 problems with a brand new secondary who obviously aren’t comfortable yet. Hopefully they gel, but regardless, our offense will keep us in every game

Because he had young guys that were able to step in and flourish under a consistent OL coach last year and this year but does not have the same for the DL.

Jamar Cain was a good recruiter but from what we have heard, he was a so so coach at best. Then we replace him with a guy that is supposed to be a good coach but he has to leave for medical reasons which forces us to have an inexperienced DL coach. The inconsistency at the DL coach position has led to some recruiting misses but the lack of depth also comes from guys like Maasson Smith and Saivion Jones not living up to their potential combined with not having any depth leftover from the last staff behind them.

To say that they aren't trying to recruit good players and then coach them up is very dismissive of the circumstances that led to the issues.

Now why won't they play Womack and Jefferson alot more? Thats a convo worth having imo.

Kelly had homerun hires on the offense. He wiffed on defense and needs to adjust asap. Fire house, steeples, and everyone else. Let Lindsay be an analyst to keep healthcare for now.

No

No we don't

But they can be average & I'd take that at this point.

I wouldn't go that far.

A great offense certainly gives you a much larger margin for error on defense. But you still have to somewhat good defensively to win a NC.

That said, you will never convince me otherwise that man for man LSU is less talented than teams like Nebraska, Maryland, Kansas, Michigan St., Arizona, etc...all of whom have been SIGNIFICANTLY better defensively than LSU.

Enough to win a NC with this offense? Maybe not.
Enough to be (at least) 4-1 with 4 double-digit wins? Absolutely!

If the players are out of position, not playing the correct defense, tackling poorly, etc in ONE game...it could be on the players. If it is happening in MULTIPLE games...it's on the coaches.

Can you please explain why I need a new hobby? My point is that good coaching/recruiting is why our offense is good, so there’s no reason why our defense should be this bad, and that Kelly is being a hypocrite when he says the defense needs more time.

Elko at Duke has a real good defense in year 2, Tennessee last year had a solid defense in there 2nd year with a new coach who took over a program in shambles, Floridas defense is much better than ours with a coach in his 2nd year. I don’t get why it takes lsu 3 years while other schools with less talent can have decent defenses in year 2.
