Government set to shutdown after House’s stopgap spending bill goes down in flames

A bill backed by House Republican leadership that would have held off a partial government shutdown for another month tanked on the chamber floor Friday afternoon, all but locking in the first suspension of some federal operations since January 2019.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) could only afford to lose four Republican votes and still pass the measure along party lines.
He lost 21 GOP votes as the bill went down, 232-198.
Even if the bill had made it through the House, its cuts of nearly 30% in discretionary spending to non-defense and non-veteran agencies meant it would not have been picked up by the Democrat-controlled Senate — while the White House issued a statement pledging to veto the measure on the slim chance it made it to President Biden’s desk.

With the Senate not expected to be able to pass its own stopgap bill until Saturday, hours before the 11:59 p.m. deadline, the House result practically ensures the partial shutdown that will lead to the furlough of some federal workers and force the military to operate without pay.
quote:
McCarthy, 58, has also vowed not to take up the Senate spending bill upon its expected passage in the face of a vocal minority of Republican members who won’t support any more temporary spending.
The Senate resolution would keep the federal government’s lights on through Nov. 17.
House Republicans are opposed to the bill over its $6 billion in aid to Ukraine, as well as the lack of funding for US border security.

They’re just gonna shutdown the ducking memorials and national parks again. The gravy will keep flowing to the criminals and their families.

I'm sure all the people in Congress will be crying while they sit at home on their old, fat asses and still receive paychecks.

frick... I have a trip next weekend that centers around national parks. The one good thing the government does.

And that's not even close to being enough. Last year's total spending would have had to be cut by ~30% just to balance with revenues. This year will likely be a larger amount.
Cutting 30% discretionary spending in FY2022 was only $1.7T (of $6T+ total spending, thus "only"). Non-defense was around $910B of that. So if the numbers remain roughly close between last year's spending and this year's, that would have been ~$300B from a fricking $5T-$6T budget with over $1.5T in deficit spending already built in.
Don't worry everyone, instead of loading bullets in all of the chambers of the pistol, we're loading only 80% of them. Happy Russian Roulette-ing! :)

Not entirely true. I know for a fact that some federal employees will be paid in back pay - in full - when things reopen.

Reminder to all you fools still thinkinng the GOP has the moral highground of “fiscal conservatism” … GOP is not opposed with trillion dollar deficits. They’re worried about 6bil for ukraine instead of 6bil for a wall.
There is no fix to the spending in sight. They want to throw a tantrum about less than 1% of our annual spending.
Pathetic, all of them

Feels like there’s an easy solution here.

Which is why all the people rooting for the shutdown are simpletons
Nothing is gained from this

Then why all the pearl clutching and hand wringing?

Isn't this true for all fed employees?

Staffers don’t receive pay. Really hurts the young aids that work in the offices and barely make anything as it is. They do get back pay.

It's a true paid vacation for most fed employees, and they whine about it.
