Black guys have been sagging pants for 30 years and still going strong. The classics never go out of style.

Because social media has scattered creativity to the wind.

Each region of the united states used to be more distinct in culture, style, music, food, etc until the age of social media. Look at popular music, most regional styles are dead. Country, rock, hip hop... it's all blended together in an amalgamation.

If you live in a small town, listen to regional music, and watch movies made before the year 2005 you can still pretend you are living in the old world.

The people who are having kids are conservatives so this might not be as bad as you think it is

As much as maybe the fashion or clothes and hairstyles might not have changed much from 2003 till now, the times have changed drastically.

2003 is back when who you voted for didn't define who you could be friends with. The graphics in tv, movies, and video games went from looking fake to looking real. We had AOL for internet and instant messaging. The only social media was MySpace. This was before any streaming service, netflix was still in a vending machine outside of Walgreens. You had appointment TV, if you missed your favorite show, that's it you missed it. Before climate change was even a thing. Before concussions were a thing in sports.

It was a much simpler time

It all changed with Obama. Tropic Thunder was released in 2008 and no one batted an eye

Netflix was mail order only back then. You're probably thinking of redbox.

I remember when Netflix and blockbuster were around simultaneously. Blockbuster was in person and Netflix was essentially the same thing but they mailed the dvd to you. I think you could rent like 3 at a time and you could keep them as long as you wanted to

Looking back, 2005, or so, was the last golden year for rentals. You had Netflix ,able to send you almost anything you wanted, and Blockbuster getting rid of late fees. Both pretty old school ways to get movies these days, but, equally satisfying: the anticipation of getting your movie in the mail or having to hop in the car and physically browse movies. That's what streaming lacks- no anticipation.

Something I just realized. The thread above this one references more cowbell. Of course everyone knows what that is referencing. If something like that happened on TV today only a few people would know about it.

There is just such an over saturation of content to consume, people just aren't consuming the same things anymore. Culture comes from the music, movies, tv shows ect...if people aren't listening and watching the same stuff then the culture as a whole cannot really be effected like it used to so it stays largely the same

Now that everyone is socially connected (via the internet and social media), there are no longer a culture of bring yourself and being unique. So groups with their own style have given way to everyone sharing everything at all times, and people are becoming more uniform as a whole.

I think this is likely true to an extent. Things that may have been more organically discovered in the past and might move through society slower are now almost instant. I don't know if it's a good thing or bad thing. But it's definitely different. With any advances in tech there are positive and negative social outcomes.

Just look to the public school systems for your answers. Kind of hard to have generational fashion trends when they've all been wearing the same navy blue shirts and khaki pants for 20+ yrs now. Same could be said for the Arts and lack of funding for those programs.

We have now raised an entire generation devoid of individuality to such a degree that any individual thoughts or concepts that don't align with the "group think" will lead to cancelation and becoming a social pariah.

There are absolutely distinct 2000s era clothes. Hollister and Abercrombie? I’ll say maybe the 2020s and 2010s are similar but I feel like I could spot 2000s era clothing a mile away.
