Lack of/hard bowel movements

Going through chemo right now. I am eating regular for the most part. This has to be a side effect because I used to be like clockwork in the morning. Have had to use an enema the last 2 times I had to go and even then the results were minimal. Tried stool softeners, suppositories and today the prep concoction with the Gatorade and Miralax for a colonoscopy with zero luck. I assume at some point this could be dangerous. Don’t know what to do.

Are you going but it’s all liquid or are you just not going at all?

Not going at all except with the enema. And I need to go. Trying to eat normal because I’m losing weight. Tried Magnesia Citrate too. Nothing

Seriously, I’d talk to your doc.
Less serious, some Indian food could fix you right up.

You need to go see a doctor. If you took a bottle of magnesium citrate and didn’t go, you have a medical condition. That makes everything fly through you at the speed of light.

Sounds like side effects of chemo. See what your onc says about it, I’m sure he can help.

Been there. Capful of miralax daily along with a stool softener daily. It’s what my oncologist recommended. Until you get regular you may want to double it.

Metamucil is your friend, drink it before bed.

Chemo fricks with the body in so many ways. It would take Miralax days to work on me, same for a stool softener and the unpredictability was misery. Finished with chemo for a year, but the immunotherapy was screwing with me, too. My body still isn’t back to normal.

Are you taking opiates to help with your treatment? This is a very common side effect of regular opiate use

This is my mom. Add to it that she's been dependent on laxatives her entire life, and has had two bowel obstructions requiring surgery. Cancer treatments just add insult to injury. I've tried to convince her to give Miralax a go, but she's insistent it doesn't work. A gastro gave her Linzess, but she's too hesitant to try it because she's afraid she's going to end up crapping herself during a dr's appt. So she takes laxatives to go and Imodium to stop. I'm at wit's end.

Ask your Dr for Linzess. The lowest dose is 72mg and you can take it daily. Works great.

After what I went through for a couple months when I started chemo, I’ll never take Imodium again. I’d rather crap my pants in church.

What chemotherapy regimen are you getting?
Posted on 9/26/23 at 12:48 pm to Dobermann
I go for IV chemo session every 3 weeks. A shot of some sort once every 3 months. Daily oral pill called Nebeqa. It’s an 18 week treatment plan. Had to be put on an antibiotic for 10 days because my second treatment lowered my white blood count to a too low of a level. I have my 3rd treatment this Friday.

Nubeqa has a high incidence of constipation. I’m guessing that your iv chemo is docetaxel, and 3month shot is lupron which I wouldn’t suspect to be a culprit here.
I would suggest an otc stool softener, plenty of hydration. Increase activity level if possible. Add some fiber to diet. Senokot if you need a laxative. If you are taking any opioid pain meds there are some rx drugs such as Amitiza that can help with contsipation caused by pain meds. Of course clear any of this with your oncologist first.

Thanks Mann. You are spot on with the Lupron and other stuff. Gonna add a stool softener into all the other damn pills I’m taking.
