Georgia suspends gas tax

Love when leadership does things for its citizens. Suspension of the gas tax will begin tomorrow, Septermber 13th and run until October 12th. This cut will save Georgians roughly 31-32 cents per gallon.

maybe not you and I, but you know how many people drive a mile out of their way because a gas station has gas for $0.10 less than the one on the corner??
I'm not saying this is going to make anyone rich, but our Governor is looking out for our people. He is also doing it in a way that really benefits those that are traveling around and likely working, instead of sitting at home

You are short sighted. You are losing the benefits of tax revenue. Kemp is trying to get Biden re-elected.
90% of people heading to Florida fills up with gas at least twice in GA. Kemp throwing away revenue to take the heat off Biden administration.

If you think prices are going down by 31-32 cents you're foolish...the gas stations will rise prices by 20 cents and you'll maybe see a 12 cent reduction.

Don't think they were permitted to do that last time. It was most certainly noticeable here when the gas tax was reinstated. It was a sizeable jump.

That means if you haven't gotten a raise of over $10,000 recently, you are in much worse financial shape.
I wonder - what percentage of the population below the upper class has gotten a $10,000 raise?

As long as they are not engaging in price gouging during some natural disaster or emergency gas stations are private businesses and free to charge any price they want on their product. Taxes and "market prices" are two completely different things.

Of course it will. And the market price for gas is what the market price is...if the cost of gas had any impact on the pricing of gas anyone could sell gas and make a living doing it. The same is true of any good and service...the costs of production, which includes taxation, had no impact on the market price...if pepperoni prices go up the cost of producing a pepperoni pizza goes up but the market price may go up, may go down, may remain the same...because production costs are not reflected in market price, they are CAPTURED In market price...a significant difference if one intends to remain in business and do so profitably. The gas tax in Georgia is $.291 a gallon. When the tax has been suspended in the past the price at the pump responded for a few days, and within a few weeks the price was exactly what it was with the tax in place while prices in neighboring states who had not eliminated their tax remained relatively stable. When the tax was reinstated the price at the pump was higher, by almost exactly the amount of the tax, as gas in neighboring states. Its a grand gesture but production costs are not a variable in market price...if they were there would be no reason to manage any business, simply charge more than it costs to produce and youre golden....

The state of Georgia has no way to legally impede the market price of a good or service....what happened every time we have done this in Georgia, dating back to when W was in the Whitehouse and gas prices went crazy, was for the price at the pump to drop for a few hours to a few days and within a few weeks be just slightly less than neighboring states and slightly less than the price at the pump was with the tax included. When the tax was reinstated the price jumps by exactly the amount of the tax making gas in the state much higher than it is in neighboring states for a few weeks...then the market takes over and prices get close to equilibrium. The first time it happened gas was cheaper in Georgia than almost anywhere in the nation because the fuel taxes in Georgia were among the lowest in the nation to begin with. Georgia is a transportation hub...loads of gas bought in the state by folks not adding much to the cost of running the state. Gas prices in Georgia were lower than in any of the 5 neighboring states. SUbstantially lower than Florida and Tennessee. We lived in Augusta at the time....folks from South Carolina would go out of their way to buy gas in Augusta because it would be $.25 a gallon cheaper. When the tax was eliminated that price dropped even more and then started to creep up slowly until it was about what it was with the tax in place. When the tax was reenacted the price in Georgia surpassed the price in the 5 states bordering Georgia and have not been cheaper since. Production costs have zero impact on market price.
