I was watching a video talking about the "commercials" issue with CFB and how the new rules are greatly shortening the games and allowing for more commercials.

said that there were 40-60 less total snaps on average. that's extremely significant. don't see how that could effect one team more than the other... but it will definitely dampen home environment because it's just such a herky jerky format that the fans can't get into it as much. IMO.

what say you guys? any effects y'all see other than a really aggravating amount of commercials?

Sauces? Would love to see a snap count comparison this year to last of week 1.

the rule is BS. Its masked with perceived "good intentions" but the motivating factor behind the move is $$$$$, as is everything else thats effecting the game. Conference realignment, NIL, etc

It's not just the commercials that fans watching on TV have to deal with. It messes up the environment in the stadium too because they all have to stand around during every break while nothing is going on. Football already had a low amount of actual game action in proportion to the length of the game before this. They just decreased the amount of action but kept the length the same, lowering it even more.

I'm not sure what the long term implications of this is going to be. I'm sure the die hards will keep watching but casual fans might get sick of it enough to stop watching. Or at the very least watch far less of it unless it's a top 5 matchup or something

You mean 60 snaps total combined for every team this weekend?

There are less snaps, but nowhere in the universe of 40-60.

Hannagriff and Ott said the average number of plays for the first weekend of games was only down like 6 plays per game from last year.

It definitely gives advantage to running teams that want to shorten the game but I'd also argue that the previous rules benefited teams that wanted to go fast and run as many plays as possible. No matter what they do, one style of play will be at an advantage.

40-60 would be almost half. No way those numbers are right.

Old rules each team would run 60-70 plays

I saw this on reddit and will post here:

quote:

FINAL AD TIMER
Game kicked off at 7:45pm and ended at 11:08pm. So the game was 3 hours and 23 minutes.

Game presentation time: Right about 2 hours, 27 minutes.

Ad time: 131 ads for 55 minutes and 48 seconds.

Disclaimers: Clocks started at the moment of kickoff.

Once the traditional commericials end, I stopped the ad clock. So all of the bumpers where the show comes back from break saying "Tonight's game is brought to you by..." was counted as game presentation. So really, the ads were more than what I tallied.

Also, things like "The Camping World Game Track" or the "Aflac Trivia Question" wasn't counted as ad time, because it took place after the show returned from break. So again, the ads were much higher.

This was done with me having two phones both with the clock aps open. It wasn't exact, but within a few seconds.

Ads shown on the scorebug or on the sidelines weren't counted either. This was done to showcase the stoppages in the game.

Conclusions: Pretty awful. There's an entire hour of just nothing happening. It's why I don't think I'm going to attend any games in person this year. It's getting beyond ridiculous. This would've easily topped an hour had FSU not pulled away and teams were driving, using their timeouts.

When FSU called a timeout to ice Ramos right before halftime, you could tell the production crew really thought hard about going to a commercial break. They zoomed out from the stadium, announcers went awkwardly silent, etc.

I was like.. are these frickers really about to run a commercial with 4 seconds left in the half?!?

They wound up going back to the announcers and BS’ing during the timeout instead but I was about to throw my remote.

I know the play count wasn’t that much different than last year, but it still seemed to me like there were an awful lot of commercials for a game in which neither team even called a timeout during the second half. Of course that’s entirely anecdotal and unscientific. Would love to see some real stats on average game length vs. commercial time compared to last year once we get a bit further into the season.

Take the points, especially if you lose the toss and receive the 1st half.
