Jackson Hole/Yellowstone Recommendations

I'm taking the family up to YS/JH area next June for the first time. I'm looking at traveling up on a Saturday and flying back the next Saturday. I'm thinking of spending two days at YS and the rest of the time in JH. We are open to suggestions such as places to stay and must see sites. Does anyone have itinerary from when they went up there? I know we need to book soon as prices are pretty steep on lodging. Thanks in advance!

YS is large! Hard to see everything in two days. If you're wanting to hike, early June might still have snow on the trails, especially in the shade and north facing. Stay in park. If you stick to two nights in YS, stay central - Canyon Lodge area or Lake Yellowstone area. If you decide to stay in GTNP, I've always like Colter Bay or Signal Mtn. Outside, Jackson Hole has more variety to pick from and offers all the areas restaurants. You have a drive into the park, but it's not too bad.

Go to the Jackson Hole rodeo.

Early June May be a tad early
We took a cheap ride up the town lift and it had great views. We even hiked. Well worth it.

Download the GuideAlong app. There’s an in app purchase of about $15 but you plug your phone in and he guides you through both parks telling you the history, the background of each stop, what to look for, and all sorts of neat things

Also, we stayed at the Hatchet Motel near the East entrance of Grand Tetons. We drove around and hiked for two days there. Then drove north through Yellowstone stopping at all the stops and stayed the night in Gardiner (North Gate of Yellowstone). We spent one day exploring the Lamar Valley and driving back through the park on the west side and again stayed in Gardiner. (At the Roosevelt Inn). The following day we explored the eastern side of the park. So 2.5-3 full days just driving around and doing the small hikes in Yellowstone

Just got back over Labor Day weekend. Really enjoyed visiting during this time. Stayed at the Teton Mountain Lodge in Teton Village. We booked two rooms through Amex (wife and I both have Platinum) and both were upgraded to a suite (as well as $40 off breakfast every day and $100 hotel credit), so the grandparents had space. This was a sign that things weren't stupid busy and it seemed that way the whole extended weekend.
I like the village area because they have activities like mountain biking that your kids could do. Driving up to park entrance up Moose Wilson road is 5 minutes away and there's a spot we saw a moose every day along there.
The Hidden Falls Jenny Lake trail is popular but it is for a reason. My kids are both 4 and younger so it was a good one for them. We got there a little after 9 and could still park. Maybe worse in June so get there early. There are of course more "hiker's hikes" in the parks like Delta Lake etc.
Jackson Lake Lodge looked cool and has spectacular views.
Lastly, the buffalo near Antelope Flats are easy to spot from the highway. However, we had some rain this weekend and I went down Antelope Flats Road and then Shadow Mountain. It was a mud pit and I was driving a minivan
. But the payoff was great because we came across some buffalo with only one other car/fellow idiot.

If you are staying for a week then you should dedicate 3-4 days to Yellowstone and then 2 days in Grand Teton NP. Jackson town can be done in a day, 2 days max if it is your first time.
If you spend more than a day in Yellowstone be aware that it is over 2 hours from Jackson to Yellowstone. And that is without traffic- which will be heavy in June.
It is an expensive vacation but well worth it.

I may be in the minority, but I greatly preferred Jackson and Grand Teton to Yellowstone. Yellowstone was basically a drivable zoo and extremely crowded.
I could hike Grand Teton every day and end it at Dornan's every evening.

Grand Teton is a superior experience if you are into hiking and not just checking an item off a list. I did the Teton Crest trial and it’s one of the best experiences of my life

Agreed. We stayed in Teton Village and enjoyed the super quick access to the park. Would like to go back without kids and stay for a couple nights in Jackson, but otherwise prefer Teton village.

Agreed. There's tons of wildlife in Yellowstone and certainly plenty to do, but I preferred GTNP and the hiking around there.

I agree 100%. After our big trip, my wife and I went back in the fall and hiked in the Tetons for a few days. Hit Jackson the first day and then stayed in the Tetons. No real desire to go back to Yellowstone.

It really just depends on what you are into, but you can't go wrong with either. Yellowstone has incredible wildlife, even if it is over crowded. There is plenty of great hiking in Yellowstone as well. If geology/thermogeology is your thing, then Yellowstone is among the most interesting things on the planet. The trick to Yellowstone is to get off of the touristy beaten path.
but the Tetons has plenty of wildlife as well, and the mountains and hiking is incredible. When we went to the Tetons last year we saw as much or more interesting wildlife in the Tetons than we did in Yellowstone.

Honestly I’m really not into huge crowds but do want to check off the main sites in Yellowstone. I think my family would be more into relaxing and having great views. This is why I had thought GTNP area would be more our speed.
