In 2018 jimmy butler was out 4-6 weeks after surgery. I’m hoping Trey is a dawg like Butler and we’ll see him by early November.

How long are these usually ?

per Athletic article on Kawahi's tear during post season last year..

"if the tear is minor and treated non-surgically, a player may return in four to six weeks. However, if surgery is necessary, recovery can take anywhere from three to six months"

Well they can vary based on severity, but let’s assume moderate severity. 4-8 weeks.

Zion missed 13-14 weeks because he was horrible at rehabbing.

Larry Nance missed 4 weeks.

Trey strikes me more as a 4-6 week type of guy and this is actually really excellent timing. He might not even miss a game. He will just miss training camp. Which in the grand scheme of things doesn’t matter much for an easy plug and play guy like Trey.

I think it depends if its a full or partial tear. Pray that its partial- recovery will be quick. If its full we may not see him till March.

Nitpicking here, but it's definitely not excellent timing, but certainly could have been much worse timing.

I think both Zion and Larry had partial tears I believe. Zion recovery I agree is mostly conditioning.

As long as it's just the MCL, it shouldn't take more than 8 weeks max. We know Zion took longer, but that was partially due to him not rehabbing or being in shape and probably partially being overprotective, but there's no reason to think even with a full MCL tear that Trey will miss more than 8 weeks.

I find it interesting that news of it was immediately leaked to woj since they’re stating it just happened today. I guess Pels have learned from past offseason injuries (Zion) that its best not to tell everyone on media day that a player has been injured for over a month. At least the organization is learning from past mistakes.

if he needs surgery he’s out 6 months
Unless his meniscus is terribly torn, he’ll be walking again in a month or so after surgery. I would say he cant play meaningful basketball for 3 months from date of surgery considering the medical care/support he will receive as an NBA athlete.

Knock on wood knowing Pelicans medical team though

Edit: With that said he’s gonna miss at least a little bit of time if he has surgery considering regular season starts Oct 25th.

Good news is if they don’t know yet whether it will require surgery or not that means it’s likely a small partial tear, so shouldn’t miss much if any of the regular season.

Unless the ACL is also involved, even a full MCL tear should max out at being out 8 weeks. Again, that's max, not average.

Full MCL Tear is 6-8 weeks.

It all depends on severity of meniscus tear. More often than not these can be treated surgically then rehab for 8 weeks or so.

I had a meniscectomy (removal of torn portion rather than repair because I am 40 and not an elite athlete) and was back to the gym in 6 weeks. An actual repair usually requires a longer rehab phase.

I would put him on a 6-8 week timeline if he undergoes surgery. Without surgery probably 4-6 weeks of rehab but it could be a lingering issue.

Hopefully it’s just a meniscus and no ligaments are involved. I’m assuming they already did an MRI if they are saying meniscus and not just the generic “knee injury.” It’s virtually impossible to distinguish knee injuries without imaging.

No mention of ACL or MCL. It is said to be a meniscus injury.

Yeah, it’s probably never excellent timing

But I’m hopeful, as long he doesn’t have a Jaren Jackson Jr type meniscus injury (he was out for a long time)

That he won’t miss a game and he won’t miss a beat bc Conditioning has always been a plus for him and he plays a lot without the ball, so he should be easier to drop into the rotation without much practice time.

I do kind of wonder if this will have any impact on his athleticism. Zion definitely lost a little bounce after his meniscus (even he admitted that), but it was always tough to tell if it was bc of weight, Conditioning, the injury, or all 3.
