I have no doubt in my mind you’re right about that. The problem is that the audience doesn’t necessarily have the exact definition of who he was talking about, thus he’s probably left with a bunch of people to whom maybe he wasn’t speaking, however they’re left with the understandable impression that he may well have been referring to them, amongst others. In that scenario the number of folks left offended has grown exponentially, regardless of his precise intent. All of which are pretty obvious reasons to avoid that situation altogether, and avoid it bigly. I believe he may be a bit temperamental and got caught up in the moment, blew off a little steam in an non-ideal way at a non-ideal time.
