Parting ways with dog after a great life.

12 and a half years together with some real dramatic slowdown in the last few months. Got sick earlier this week and vets did what they could for him, but late last night informed me the options were several days of intense hospitalization with a very low chance of success and then continued problems if he made it or to let him go on peacefully. I chose the peaceful route.
Really feeling it this morning. He had an amazing life and I'm glad I got to see him out.

So vet sorry for your loss
“Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion.
There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price.” – Dean Koontz

So sorry for your loss. We had to put down the greatest boy in our family on Friday also.

Never easy, but upside is knowing they had a good human who gave them a loving home.
May not sound like much, but sometimes it's enough.

Good dogs never live long enough.
I lost a dog I'd had for 13 years last June. Still miss him. Getting another dog right away helped a lot.

I'll not get another until I'm pretty sure it can outlive me. I cant go through losing another.

Ours is going on 16. Mostly blind and deaf. Fell in the damn pool a few nights back on his late night go out. Must’ve scared the death out of him. He is doing good this week.
Been feeding him steak and burgers on grill nights for a year thinking it may be his last meal. He may be faking to keep getting steak.

Had to put my german shepherd down a couple weeks ago. Was only 8 years old
Third german shepherd i’ve had to put down and it doesn’t get any easier. I find solace in knowing I gave him the best life possible. Getting a new dog/cat also helps. Keep your mind occupied

My last one was a GSD, they are incredible animals in every way. I hurt 13 years later.
I am addicted to the breed, they take on human like qualities because they bond so strongly with humans. Its so hard to let go.

Likewise. Feel like that damn dog understood 90% of my vocabulary. It’s like losing a family member
