OT Parents: At what age did you start letting your kid stay home by themselves?

Currently in a “discussion” with step-kid’s mom about what age it is appropriate to leave a kid home alone for a couple of hours.
I feel like my own frame of reference is probably skewed because I was a latch key kid and was home by myself at 12 for about 2-3 hours every weekday.
Some variables:
- We live in a suburb in a low crime area with your typical security camera situation.
- The step-kid will be 15 in two months. She also has a cell phone with service for emergencies.
- Her Dad’s parents live two streets over and are able to stop by.

Started about 11ish for my son. My daughter, about the same.
However..... my daughter's Godfather lives 2 doors down, and my sister in law lives about 6 house away. We wouldn't let them stay home alone if neither of them were home.

12 or so for a few hours while we ran errands or whatever. It really depends on the kid though.
Me and my siblings stayed home all summer by ourselves at 8, 10 and 12 but different times and all

Probably when my oldest was about 12. But we didn’t leave the baby with her. And it was two hours max.

she is 11.5

Summer of 1998 I started staying by myself with my sister. I was 12, going on 13, and she was 10.

When they can ride a bike. Once they do that then they can be on their own.

My oldest was 12. My younger kids I would have had no problem leaving them at 8.

Mom is worried about her daughter being a slut. I remember girls wanting to be diddled by some of the neighborhood kids when they were left at home at 13 or 14. Glad I was able to assist.

For daughter, around 12. For boys, around 45.

She’s 14 months away from driving a car…if you can’t let her stay at home alone, how in the world can she be expected to drive in 14 months.
For me growing up I was 11 (1995).

She’s pretty awkward in that regard but smart, so I don’t think that’s the case. Plus she goes to school in the county her Mom lives in, so she doesn’t have any close friends here in short proximity.
It’s probably worth disclosing her Mom got upset two weekends ago when I started showing the kid how to cook with the stove (supervised). She claimed I’ve now shown her “how she can burn the house down”.

And the kid is 15? Seems quite overprotective. Our youngest is 16 and she's gone in the car right now

Why are you in a discussion with her and not your husband?

It sounds to me that you're in a no win situation. This is a helicopter mom to the full extent. Unfortunately this kid might end up depending on her parents to do everything for her until she's 30 since she's still being treated like an 8 year old. All the mom is doing is delaying her development into adulthood, but maybe that's what mom wants?

He is. We’re both in the discussion. We actively co-parent.
