I like it when clerks engage in some light small talk but joking is never a good idea. Joking with children is a very bad idea and joking about pre-teens menstrual products is beyond stupid.
Looking at the guy he probably just tries to make his shitty job a little more tolerable by talking to customers and probably makes a lot of customers smile but there are just lines you don't cross.

I took it as a joke about the Dollar General bag. He asked if she wanted a bag, she said yes, and he said what would the neighbors think.

The dad handled that a lot more calmly than I probably would have been able to. I'm a father to a 10 year old girl who recently started to deal with that and that's a situation where I feel like I may have just seen red and said frick the repercussions. Especially after catching his attitude and seeing the fairy wearing a bow tie and whatever that is pinned to his chest.
