I’m curious, what would happen to our 401k’s in the event of a dollar collapse or economy collapse?

Can any of you shed some light? Thank you & Buenos Tardes to you,

How would you define collapse? Because how you define a collapse will mean the answer to your question is either “401ks would be worth a lot less” or “401ks would be worth zero”

Because all our 401ks are invested in the same things?!

It all depends what is nature of the collapse, is whole world economy collapsed?

Are you invested in US bonds, US equities, international, commodities?

Sorry, yours is a dumb open ended question.

If the dollar collapses you have much bigger issues than your 401k

Make sure you are diversified and not 100% your company stock.

Signed, Enron Employees

Beyond that, if you are diversified and everything crashes we are screwed anyways

If the dollar collapses….as in ceases to exist? How would that happen? Runaway inflation?

Need more info on the scenario here to gauge how prepared I am for it. I am hedging against inflation, but not a total collapse of currency. For that I’m relying on metals….namely gold, silver, and ammo.

Just put 5% into the new Bitcoin ETF if that is a serious concern you have.

That said, the $ does not have any real competition at the moment.

I was a little concerned about BRICS but after digging a little deeper they are a shite show

It amazes me that anyone with a cursory knowledge of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa bought that narrative

Let's say the Dollar collapses. Toilet Paper is worth more because it's a little more comfortable to wipe with. 60% of the world economy is based off of the USD. You are talking about world wide repercussions.

In other words, your 401k would be the least of your worries.

401K are built for the long haul and you should anticipate peaks and valleys, you are looking for a long term % that beats other investment opportunities.

If the dollar collapses it will come back at some point so ride it out.

Uncle Sam is not going to let it get too bad before they step in

Stock prices are just prices. All else held equal, they'd go up proportionally.

Of course, all things would not be held equal, and there are downsides to inflation. So one might expect stock prices to increase, but in the short-to-medium run they'd probably fail to keep up with increases in the prices in consumer goods.

The one form of savings that will never keep up with inflation is cash. So, if you're thinking of getting out of stocks, bonds, and mutual funds, make sure you have a better place to park your money than a savings account (or under your mattress).
