Childhood obesity rates continue to rise in the U.S., affecting nearly 1 in 5 kids and adolescents ages 2 to 19.

To combat it, experts are calling for early and intensive treatment. For some children, that may include weight loss medications.

The American Academy of Pediatrics included anti-obesity drugs for the first time this year in its guidelines for treating childhood obesity. According to the guidelines, pediatricians should offer weight loss drugs to adolescents ages 12 and up with obesity, alongside diet and lifestyle changes that encourage healthy eating and exercise.

Four weight loss drugs are approved for use in adolescents as young as 12: Wegovy, Saxenda, orlistat and Qsymia. Wegovy and Saxenda are part of a newer class of drugs called GLP-1 agonists that have soared in popularity in the past year.

The recommendations were immediately met with controversy, especially from groups concerned about eating disorders, who worried that including weight loss drugs would ultimately be harmful to children.

The drugs — though highly effective for weight loss — do come with drawbacks: They’re pricey and not always covered by insurance, and experts believe people taking them will need to be on them long-term.

I dunno. Normally I’m not for drugs for kids but this generation is fat as frick and I’ve seen adults cut their weight in half with this and the kids aren’t going to stop playing their video games

It’s not a puberty blocker at least?

I’ll just say there are probably worse things for kids these days

I was a fat kid from 5th grade til a sophomore in high school

Just get in the fricking gym, get to work, and eat a little better.

It's more mental than anything but people don't want to put in any effort.

And yes, I know I'm probably coming off as a douche for saying this

They shouldn't have them in the first place.

It's appalling to me that parents will buy their kids tablets and video games at such a young age. It turns them into zombies.

How long before this is called fat shaming? Cuz fat is beautiful, right? And you can be fat but healthy.

They're not being worked physically. When I was young, I was playing sports non stop. Also mowing lawns with a push mower and then given labor chores by my dad to do around the house. Chopping wood, moving gravel, etc.

Now these kids just stare at their phones and play vidya games.

Make those fat asses go outside and run some laps.

I don’t understand how you can have a fat child. My kids eat junk and watch tv to an extent but they are active in sports and dance. They aren’t allowed to just eat all day and do nothing.

Normally I’d be against m unnecessary medical intervention, but it’s clearly a problem and kids medicated but not obese is much better than being obese and the downstream effects (both on them personally and to us as a country and their medical costs, etc)

The kids (and populace) are already fat, telling them to diet and exercise doesn’t work after a certain point. Hopefully this is a true breakthrough and impacts us positively for generations to come.

If obese people can medicate and become healthy, they feel better have more energy and can pass those healthy habits on to their kids and establish a new “normal” again reversing the junk food fast food genre rations we grew up in

Between the ADHD speed, the puberty blockers, and the diabetes drugs, kids are a real goldmine for the good people at the pharma companies. Also definitely expect the media to give a balanced take on whether it's good for their biggest advertisers to put 12 year olds on life-time courses of meds for a problem that basically didn't exist 30 years ago.

We are past this. Fat parents do not know how to make their kids be active.

Just losing weight doesn't make you healthy. Obese people are very commonly malnourished because all they eat is shite.

Taking a pill that makes them eat less just makes them a less obese malnourished person.

Honestly, unless it's legit medical reason, I don't see how kids can't burn off these calories.

I ate a metric frick ton of calories of healthy and unhealthy foods as a kid and couldn't keep weight on bc of my metabolism and how much we played outside.

ETA: I spent a lot of time playing video games as a kid. Those aren't the problem, neither is junk food. You can do both of these things as a kid with plenty of time to be outside and play/exercise.
