Walton & Johnson said he was in the building that straddles the border where both sides can meet. The North Koreans stormed in and took him.

When I was there in 1990, service members could take a tour of the DMZ. He may have been on a tour and wandered into an off limits area. Soldiers are dumb AF.

They've got a 2.5 mile wide DMZ separating North and South Korea. If he got into N. Korea, it was no "Oops, I took the wrong turn" thing.

I was in that building back in '86, it's a single room with a long white table in the center, and the obligatory 2" wide stripe across the floor and table indicating the demarcation between N and S.
We walked all the way around the table at the time, guess the protocols have changed for that building.
