You don’t pay pilots for when everything goes as planned.

Well 10 or 15% is just keeping up with the inflation since Biden took over.
As has been said elsewhere those hikes stay unless there is some deflation.

probably what they had to pay to keep DEI out of the mouths of the union lobbyists

during the pandemic, the airlines encouraged any pilot who could retire to do so. they are probably low on real senior pilots. this raise may not hit them hard for several years. the raise is probably top heavy favoring the most senior pilots. i think this is why they cancel so many flights now. shortage of pilots.

A lot of this is catching up from their last contract. Many of the airline pilots haven't seen an increase in pay in over five years. 40% seems like a lot, but if they haven't been getting an 8-10% bump the last five years, it kinda makes sense.

This seems like a stupid thing to complain about.

Who the hell gets a 40% raise in one swoop or that a guy on a rookie contract...LOL.
Supply and demand. The aviation industry as a whole, fixed wing and rotary wing in the US are critically short on future pilots. That is why you are seeing huge pay raises.
It cost roughly $100k to build the flight time to be hired by a part 121 operator to fly for the regional airlines. It cost closer to $125k to fly for a part 135 rotary operator.
Over the next decade there is increasing demand and around 75,000 pilots short of current needs. That’s not even considering growth in the industry.
Airlines pilots are responsible for more lives in a year than a doctor will be in his entire career. Yeah let’s put unqualified people in the cockpit because of automation.
How about go get your ratings, build your 1500 hours of flight time and go make that money.

Unions are not necessary at all
In some instances they are very needed. Transportation is one of the entities it is most needed because without it you have government and big business calling the shots concerning job safety. People would be working longer hours and for less pay if you didn't have the little guys making waves about safety conditions as related to their jobs.
Do you actually think that if the little guy didn't raise hell to politicians about unsafe working conditions that the government would actually take the lead in protecting said employees with their safety at work? Corporate money greases the hands of politicians, we all know that but politicians realize that it is the working class that gets them elected so the pols have to listen to them.
That's the upside to a union imo.

I hate unions also but I go to recurrent training every 6 months and no emergencies are automated. Engine failures, engine fires, rapid decompression, total loss off all electrical, bird strikes, high speed aborted takeoffs, thunderstorms and on and on the list is very long, all require the pilots to do what they have been trained to do over and over to save the aircraft and it’s passengers.

Ryan Air has a better safety record than any major US airline and they certainly don't pay their pilots like royalty. Higher compensation does not equal safer pilots.
A simple YT search will show you that when the pilots do have to fly the plane(landing under 300 AGL), Ryanair pilots show of their skills. If you enjoy your balls in your mouth, you will love Ryanair.

Article says United. That being said I’m not a fan of unions but when it comes to a fricking airplane I’m all for paying the experienced guys whatever it takes to keep them on the payroll
I think the airline industry is now taking high school grads that pass a aptitude test and training them to be commercial airline pilots. …I always feel better on a flight when the pilots are ex military.

Safety my arse. The largest pilot union in the US, ALPA, has fought to keep pilots that have shown up for work drunk or high on drugs in the cockpit.

I don't begrudge pilots getting what they can get. The only way to the top is to pick an airline and sit in a seat forever and get promoted when your turn comes up. A lot of people won't do that.

Labor shortages are a real thing.
We're trying to hire able bodies seamen, the Federal Govt is outbidding everyone plus offering bonuses. We are cancelling routes because of this issue.

I understand supply and demand, but if course the only reason that this happens is because all of them threaten to go at one time. So it isn't like just the ones in Chicago are threatening so you could bring some in from other places.
They do not have a choice other than shuting down operations.

Tractors drive themselves now and are more automated than ever(and people still mess stuff up) that doesn’t mean I’m gonna put just anybody on one. You still need people who know what to do when the automated stuff malfunctions
Ehhh most farmers I know just have a few crackheads they hire seasonally to drive combines and tractors.
A few actually buy crack for them so they can run 18 hours and the driver not fall asleep

I'm well aware of the training airline pilots receive. I'm not sure what that has to do with my post. I said that higher pay does not equal a safer pilot. And that is the truth. Delta, American, United, etc have killed thousands of passengers while Ryan Air and other low cost carriers have killed none. Also, one of the largest regional airlines in the US, Skywest (they operate jets on behalf of American, Delta, United, and Alaska) is non-union and has an excellent safety record.

more inflation spiral. ... higher ticket prices.

Unions are not the problem in this country. I want a well paid stress free pilot flying my fat arse around. Don't want a guy who is worried about affording sending his kids to college or paying his house note. Pilots are a different breed of folk and have more responsibility than any other profession.

I believe you're stretching the truth there a tad. I'm thinking the union doesn't want anyone to lose their job over failing a drug/alcohol test. You really expect us to believe that union is saying it's okay if their pilots are under the influence while in the captain's seat? I don't.
