Lookin for flights to Switzerland. Couple questions

I’m looking at flying outta Dallas or Houston for next summer. Staying in Lauterbrunnen and spending about 9 days exploring . Which airport would you suggest flying into? Geneva or Zurich ? (Or somewhere else ). Also, have any of you flown with Iberia airlines? They have some good times into either airport with layovers in Madrid. Delta has some similar fares with layovers in JFK. Any feedback appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I really do believe this is the most beautiful place in the world. Have fun! I flew into Zurich and Geneva for different trips. I did Zurich when I went to Lauterbrunnen, though, because it took me though Lucerne and I wanted to stay there a night.
You probably cant really go wrong. Geneva would put you closer to Mont Blanc. Lots to see there. Chamonix is a great town. I would honestly consider flying into Zurich and out of Geneva if you want to see a little more.

Thanks for input. I think Zurich will be my choice bc Lucerne would def be a nice stop along the way. I’d love to do the open jaw back outta Geneva but rental cars already lookin steep so I’ll have to price out a one way and see if that’s something I wanna pony up for.

I've got a corporate code that works great for discounted rentals and also gives me a huge discount on one ways. You could see if your company has something similar.

You can look into Basel too. I like to look at all options for price and timing.

Thanks for feedback. Would you opt for a foreign airline or the delta flight with a layover @ jfk. I hear some posters saying NY isn’t a good place for a layover right now. Keep in mind though this trip isn’t til early summer of 24.

I’m familiar with Air France and klm but have never flown Iberia , Lufthansa, or British Airways. All of those are offering flights for the times/dates I need at comparable prices and flight times. Looking like right now it’s about 1200-1300ish per person. (Will be me and Mrs jkyle ). I’m not sure if I should wait and see if they go down closer to time or if thats an ok price point.

I've flown British, Air France, Delta, American, Qatar, and Lufthansa across the pond recently. All of them have their pros and cons and I would choose based on a variety of factors. Are you flying business or economy, what do the layovers and connecting airports look like, etc.
If you get delayed you have EU 261 compensation but only if you're on an EU carrier or a US carrier flying to the EU. If you fly British/American and connect in London, you won't get anything if your US-London flight has an issue, etc.
EDIT: Looks like you're going in economy. I'd try and book on either the 767 or the A330 where you can get a pair of two seats together and not have to share a row. The 787/A350 is in a 3-3-3 layout and the 777 is in a 3-4-3 layout so you'll either have to crawl over someone or have someone crawling over you with someone stuck in a middle seat

Thanks a lot. Good info. Yes , I almost exclusively fly economy. Quantity or quality with my travels. At least with the flights.
Fwiw. Air Canada is also an option

I used this book extensively when I went to Lauterbrunnen. My intention was to hike up to berghauses and stay at those. We only made it to one but I would definitely go back to finish my original trip

Flew Iberia out of Philly to Lisbon last summer. It was fine. No issues and they were flexible with moving seats assignments.

Was hoping someone would chime in with some Iberia feedback. I like that they have 3+ hour layovers. (Some of the others are a little tight ). I also like the prospect of a layover in Madrid as opposed to some of the others. I may give them a shot. I’d say it’s between them and Delta right now.

Not sure I'd want to spend 3+ hours in Madrid. I'd lean towards Delta and then, when you land, you would go through passport control.
Connecting in the states means you're a domestic passenger so no extra security and I guarantee your flight times will change between now and next summer.

Good point. You wouldn’t have any reservations with JFK as a connection?

JFK in the summer is always a crapshoot. But that holds true for a few airports that time of year.

Well went into Geneva after connecting in Dulles via United. Ate by the lake and took at train to Zermatt.
Very easy to get around. I’d fly into whichever airport was the cheapest

We were coming from London, but flew into Geneva and did the Zermatt area first before Lauterbrunnen. Flew out of Zurich connecting through JFK.
Going in one and out the other gives you the opportunity to see a little more, but I think Zurich would be best if you’re only going to be in Lauterbrunnen. Spend your last night in Lucerne and you’ll only be about an hour from ZRH

I would take AA/BA DFW-LHR-ZRH or UA/Swiss from IAH-ZRH direct.
If you don't care about connections, then any route combination is fine.
Iberia is fine, but I detest MAD.

Appreciate all the replies. I ended up pulling the trigger this morning on a flight. Went DFW-JFK-ZRH. Same itinerary on the return flight. Went with delta. I think having a domestic layover vs international will be a little smoother. Ended up being 1300-pp on economy which seems a little steep but I’ll take it .

If you have that long of a trip, I’d suggest spending a night or two in Lucerne and a night or two in Interlaken. It will break up the travel and they are great places to explore and take day trips from.
We moved around a lot (Zurich to Lucerne to Wengen to Interlaken to Zurich) and the trains make it very easy to get from one to another and do day trips in the area. Enjoy, Switzerland is probably my favorite trip I’ve ever been on.
