Will Bob Iger decide to sell Disney?

Bob Iger built Disney into the world’s most powerful entertainment company by acquiring Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm. Now he’s looking to downsize.
Iger put roughly a third of the company up for sale this week, declaring Disney’s linear TV assets noncore. That includes TV networks ABC, FX and Freeform. He also said Disney is looking for a strategic partner for ESPN — though he’s not willing to sell the whole thing — and the company is already looking to sell or restructure its TV and streaming business in India.
It’s a stunning if inevitable turn of events for an executive who spent so much of his career working in TV, and for a company that relied on cable networks for the majority of its profit. Before the pandemic, Disney’s media networks generated 35%, or $24.8 billion, of company revenue and more than 50%, or $7.5 billion, of its operating income.
Yet the accelerating decline of cable TV has limited Iger’s options. He thought he’d solved this problem with Disney+ and Hulu, his two mass-market streaming services. But his streaming business is expected to register a loss of about $800 million in the company’s just-ended third quarter.
quote:
It’s not yet clear how serious Iger is about selling entire TV networks. ABC, for example, is key to retaining NBA rights. FX has been a key supplier of programming to Hulu, which Iger plans to keep and fold into Disney+.
Yet Iger’s CNBC interview was unmistakably a distress signal. Disney is contractually obligated to buy Comcast Corp.’s one-third stake in Hulu in a deal that would value the business at least at $27.5 billion. It’s also wrestling with a colossal debt pile stemming from its $71.3 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
A sale of the TV business could fetch around $8 billion, according to Wells Fargo analyst Steve Cahall — which would largely offset the cost of acquiring the piece of Hulu it doesn't yet own. Most of the potential suitors for linear TV networks are financial entities, like private equity firms, that would milk them for cash as they decline into obscurity.
The list of interested parties in ESPN is longer, and could include tech giants like Apple, as well as sports companies like Fanatics. The streaming side of the sports giant, ESPN+, remains more of a niche business. But Disney continues to signal it will offer all of ESPN outside of the cable bundle in the near future.
quote:
After receiving a two-year contract extension this past week, Iger has three more years to clean up a big mess that also includes a slowdown in the company’s theme-park business, a series of misses for the company’s film division and the strike by Hollywood actors and writers against all of the media companies.
Rumors have long swirled that Iger will end up selling all of Disney to Apple. It’s still hard to imagine Iger selling Disney to anyone. He was always a builder — not a seller. But Bob the builder is doing a lot more cutting this time around.

Sorry to not see Lucasfilm mentioned.
The woke writing came at the worst time for Disney with the entire media consumption model changing to streaming.
They had layups with Marvel and star wars, pixar, but they decided to dive head first into the culture wars.

So the plan is to go all in on the floundering streaming services?

How can you freak up Disney? They deserve everything coming their way.

It is unreal how far they have fallen. In 2019, they ruled the entire entertainment world and no one came close.
Hell in movies alone that year, that had these blockbusters: Avengers: Endgame, Lion King, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, Captain Marvel, Star Wars RoS, Maleficent, and Aladdin.
I know several of those sucked but all still made tons of money. I think this was part of their downfall though as they developed an unreal arrogance about their product and became dismissive of their own fan base.
This hostility toward their own fans was only part of it. They also hired people based on diversity quotas instead of actual creative talent. Their insistence on pushing a message over good storytelling also damaged their product.
They also picked fights with the Florida government. Their obsession with the alphabet crowd goes beyond all reason. The recently put a trans guy with a beard as the "hostess" of Disneyland boutique for little girls.
It is probably best if they sell it at this point. Maybe someone can salvage those IPs for future generations.

Disney is too big for anyone to buy the whole thing. It would have to be broken up into many pieces.

They started lying to themselves about what fans want.
Remember when they convinced themselves that Solo bombed because no one was interested in revisiting the OT characters with new actors instead of admitting the truth: that people were mad about Last Jedi and decided to boycott Solo in response?
Yeah. Disney's been lying to themselves for years now in order to convince themselves that audiences want their favorite franchises and characters sacrificed at the alter of woke.

Disney is a $170B company.
Apple is a $3T company.
Apple could eat Disney many times over.

Disney as a whole will never go away. ESPN, Hulu and others I can see them selling.

Apple could buy Disney with change in Tim Cook's office cushions

There’s some Disney assets that could be spun off, like NatGeo. But the most valuable pieces are all so intertwined with each other than splitting them up hurts value
The streaming division takes a big hit in value if they sell off the various movie studios separately. What good is buying D+ if someone else can buy Lucasfilm or Pixar and the new D+ owner doesn’t have exclusive access to the content library or has to get into bidding wars with other streaming platforms to keep exclusive rights?
How much less valuable is the theme park division if you don’t own the characters and IPs that so many of the attractions are built around?
ESPN and ABC almost have to be a package deal because of the live sports deals in place

Apple could straight up pay cash for Disney without breaking a sweat.

The fact the sale of Disney is even discussed is proof of Iger's incompetence.

TBF to Iger and Chapek, then weren't the only ones jumping on the streaming train. These big corps wanted what Netflix had and it's coming back to haunt them.

No, Lukas and possibly another studio or 2 get sold.
The mouse still pays the bills. Have to quit making shite films and series.
I see marvel being sold. They have had flop after flop. And the new marvel movies look mediocre and it looks like they infested the Deadpool series with their crap stories
