Donald Trump authored a book in 2000 where he called Social Security a “Ponzi scheme.”

In the “America We Deserve,”he proposed to raise the retirement age to 70, which he said could add $3 trillion to Social Security within 10 years. All while cutting taxes for the middle class.

As recently as 2020, Trump, when asked about Federal entitlement spending, said that cuts had to be made. When asked about his potential actions as President, he responded, “Oh, we’ll be cutting, but we’re also going to have growth like you’ve never had before.”

This is the kind of middle of the road, moderate, common sense, hardcore Republican ideals we like to see in our candidates.

Edited: the fact checkers have helped me out. I was wrong. I said it was DeSantis who wrote the paper in 2000. This was actually a book by Trump. My bad.

If God appeared in the sky and said we had to end SS and Medicare or the country would collapse, Congress would probably expand the programs.

Such is life, entitlements never end.

The majority of citizens in this country will never accept the personal responsibility that would require someone to think about their own healthcare and retirement decisions.

That’s a refreshing take. Social security and Medicare have not helped this country at all—quite the opposite.

Entitlements need to end. Sorry boomers.

A forced retirement plan that doesn’t kick in til 70. That’s awesome.

The smart people who aren’t just grifting for votes agree that this is almost certainly going to have to happen.

I’ll likely never see a dime of the “entitlement” money I’ve paid into social security, but I sleep better knowing my tax dollars are going to Ukrainians entitlements that they deserve way more than I do.

Bush tried it an got crucified.

But it is the best thing.

Social Security will eventually die. But it will be from a catastrophic crash instead of a controlled transition.

I'm a boomer solidly into my entitlements. I'm sure if these entitlements are slated to be ended, I'd be grandfathered in for mine but you would not get yours. Such is life.

SS is only part of the ponzi. I admit, it's not a perfectly defined ponzi. If Charles Ponzi had the ability to print money he would have never been caught.

Isn't the latter Trump's plan?

I did not say exclusively Trump's plan.

There's going to be a lot of overlap between GOP primary candidates.

I don't plan to retire until around 70 or so but there's a lot of people due to situations beyond their control who will be forced to retire sooner. They paid their fair share. This is not welfare. They deserve it. Congress should have never been allowed to dip into that fund.

You really have no understanding of how this works.

The boomer will always have if they have it now - as will all who have it.

It is younger people that will never have it if ended.

Anyone that calls SS a Ponzi scheme should be disregarded.

It’s not a retirement plan, never has been. It’s a safety net for those who were unfortunate enough to not have a retirement plan so that when they are elderly and aren’t able to work any longer aren’t forced to live under an overpass and holding cardboard signs begging for money. Everyone who paid in is able to draw from it once they reach a certain age or have disabilities and can’t work, but it’s not a retirement plan and people need to stop considering it to be one.
