Louisiana Treasure

Not exactly treasure, but I dove deep into the Indian mounds that were found near there. Seems like LSU wants to keep that place a secret.

That did happen, and he didn’t dig it up?

According to the story my great grandma (his daughter) found it so he went and reburied and didn't tell them where. He rode with Wingfields 3rd cavalry and was killed somewhere in Mississippi I believe. So they never knew where he reburied it.

I'm kind of sketchy on the details because it happened years ago before I was born, around the mid 1950s.

But the family story was my great uncle was a shrimper and had a big boat and trawled offshore in the Gulf out of Morgan City. One day he was pulling and picked up his nets and in the net there was bunch of old half rotten boards and wood tangled up in the net. As he was untangling the net, he found some old coins. They turned out to be Spanish gold coins. Only about 20 of them. The story goes that he dragged that area where he was shrimping for a couple of days trying to pick up more of the wreck or whatever it was, but came up empty handed. He guessed that he dragged his net over part of a sunk ship and picked up part of it.

I remember from when I was a little kid that at his house he the coins in a display case in his den. He died years ago, so I guess his kids now have the coins.

I’ve heard variations on this story for half the plantations in my area. I’m sure it happened a few times, but it’d be impossible to find anything without some accurate way of metal detecting large swaths of land quickly.

Yea who knows if its true. I do a lot of metal detecting and have found some pretty neat stuff, but have been all over the old home site where this supposedly took place and have never found a single coin
