I think it’s a possibility the coaches will let him play SS and pitch next year like Florida did Cag this year. What’s the rant think?

That’s a lot of demand on his arm. May work in a relief role. Also, it’s going to be based on his hitting as well and that’s hard to predict since he had so few opportunities this year.

Thompson was originally looked at as a pitcher and became a great SS. Guidry was looked at first at SS and turned into a dog on the mound. It’s tough to get every projection right for a 16-17 year old. Many of them are athletes and can do well at many positions. People probably don’t realize that Crews could have been our catcher and the best one in the country at it.

Shortstop is a tough position to be a two way player at.

It’s not ideal to have to take your starter at a premium position and put the backup there for a period of time while the starter is pitching. Not saying it can’t be done or they won’t do it. It’s just not the best position for the team to be in.

Florida had the luxury of their backup 1st baseman also being able to hit. He was the DH when Cags was playing 1st. So days when Cags is pitching the lineup itself doesn’t actually change.

Doing it from first base is much different than from SS.

I don’t think he will do both. SS is a critical position. You want to try and have consistency at that position. So if he pitches then someone else would have to play there. Who knows Coach Jay will do what’s best for the team.

Gavin wants to play SS and hit. He prefers doing that only to being a PO

I think Guidry wont pitch at all next year unless the need arises much like this season. If we have a string of more injuries and the pen is getting super thin of quality arms, I can see them using Guidry in some late game situations if they feel comfortable with a defensive replacement at SS...but if we have enough arms better to just leave him at SS.

If he in fact wins the SS job.

I want my same SS playing every inning. Several reasons.

JJ said that was the plan for next year.

unless he completely explodes as a SS then I cant see ya taking him out to throw sliders to illicit ground balls to a backup SS

You don't want your SS not playing 1/3rd of your games. I've seen this at the HS level. WM had a team that went 39-3, losing in the finals to Central. All 3 losses came when the SS, Taylor Young LA Tech/Dodgers org, pitched. It's not that he was a bad pitcher at all. It's that you have to shift around your entire infield for him to take the mound. LSU won't have to shift the entire infield, but you still don't want multiple SS.

This may be why we brought in the South Carolina shortstop.

I would rather he not pitch and play defense if he can hit.

Guidry only became a pitcher due to injuries to the pitching staff.. other than that he was destined at Shortstop…next baseball season he will be a shortstop unless there’s a lack of arms or injuries..wash, rinse, repeat…

Here's the thing Cag wasn't a great pitcher. Sure he had off the charts stuff, but he just didn't develop or sustain very well at all.

I wonder if some of that didn't have to do with the fact that he played 1B. I mean he had to think about, practice, play, etc that position in addition to pitching and hitting. Hell, even Ohtani doesn't play a position...he DHs when he isn't pitching.

I just wonder if playing a position may not be a bit much.

If he is a pitcher, he needs to be a pitcher. If he is a starting middle IF, also... But it can't hurt to keep an emergency arm around, or a pitcher that can field...

I think Jay will bring another experienced middle infielder to go with Braswell. Not to say that Guidry, Nippolt, and the freshmen won't get a shot, but I believe Jay wants to have something solid to lean on.

Some names to monitor: Sam Mongelli, Peyton Chategnier, Braden Montgomery.

I would like to see him become truly great at one position by devoting all of his time there. We don't need two-way players to win.

Guidry was needed in the bullpen after losing Taylor, Shores and Edwards.

I think he will strictly be a SS next year.
