Yale and Navy have the same # of Heisman winners as...

Why didn't Miami win more in their 10 year dominance 1980s to the 90s, like Bama was racking up Heismans, playing catch-up in their recent run?

Why didn't Miami win more in their 10 year dominance 1980s to the 90s, like Bama was racking up Heismans, playing catch-up in their recent run?

I could be wrong but a lot of that probably had something to do with the people that could actually watch the games. Alabama’s wins came at a different time when it comes to the availability and ease of watching college football.

It blew my mind that when Mark Ingram won, he was Bama’s 1st Heisman. How, with all those great teams in the past, all those national championships with Bear Bryant that no one won a Heisman before, but Auburn had 2 at the time, Florida had 3, LSU had 1, South Carolina had 1, and Georgia 2, But I guess they were in a similar situation as Tennessee.

If I'm not mistaken, most of the sportswriters at the time were in the NE and West.

But LSU, Georgia, Florida all managed to have a Heisman winner before the 70’s, and then Auburn by 71’, so these sports writers did cover southern football.

The Heisman voting standards were different back then. Look at 1956. Paul Hornug won with a 3-13 TD int ratio on a 2-8 team. Jim finished 5th behind a lineman who played RB the season before.

I think it's because from 1983 - 1991, there were some all-time great Heisman Trophy winners:
1983 - Mike Rozier
1984 - Doug Flutie
1985 - Bo Jackson
1988 - Barry Sanders
1990 - Desmond Howard

It sucks that the award is mostly the QB on title contending team.
It was refreshing to see Devonte Smith win, even if he was from Bama. RG3 was a refreshing choice as well, given Baylor wasn’t a household name quite yet.

Up until the 2007 season, the Big 10 had 17 Heisman Trophy winners while the SEC had 9. Make that of what you will.

The media had it biases back then. I really stop caring about the Heisman when even as an LSU graduate and fan, Derrick Thomas of Alabama didn't win it. That guy in my opinion was the best PLAYER in college football doing his time.

Thomas was a once-in-a-lifetime talent. But wasn't there some issues with defensive players winning the Heisman back then?
He also had the luxury of going up against Barry Sanders, who was a shoo-in for the award given his eye-dropping numbers.

Explaining Heisman winners is a waste of time. Many schools had their propaganda machines running 24/7. Many teams ran offenses that were designed to be great stat stuffers and this is still very much a QB award. And then there's politics. This has never historically been a Southern award.
So down here in the South, you get philosophical about the whole Heisman thing. As Coach Bryant put it so eloquently years ago: "At Alabama, we don't win Heismans, we win National Championships." Ain't that right Joe Willie, Richard Todd, Kenny The Snake Stabler, David Palmer.......................

The Heisman winner and best player in the country are not synonymous. The position nonsense is one such reason

I love the East Coast, but not 1 media member in that region should have credentials/vote/or any kind of day when it comes to cfb.
It’s primarily a southern/Midwestern sport w pockets of interest out west.

Everyone uses his award over Jim Brown as Notre Dame media propaganda.
In the 1956 season Hornung led his team offensively in passing, rushing, scoring, kickoff and punt returns, and punting.
He also played defense, led in passes broken up, and was second in interceptions and tackles made.
Jim Brown rushed for 986 yards and 13 Tds and was given the ball all game long.
For an award that became a QB/RB award...But described as College Football's best all-around player or most outstanding player, it certainly wasn't a stretch to give it to Hornung.
