Essentially it’s a cover but with the lyrics going over events from ‘89 to now or the millennial version of the song

The events aren’t in (essentially) chronological order. It’s just stuff that’s happened since 1989 that kinda rhymes. The brilliance of Joel’s version is the events are on a timeline AND kinda rhyme. There are a few clever lines here, but like a lot of things that copy from the past, it misses the essence of the original. It’s just simulacrum.
