I hate to say it but that's my belief

He had a flaming hot start to the week, nearly 2.8 days worth of elite timeless golf

And still managed to just fade it out on Sunday

Most golfers will never win a major.

Stricker, Westwood, Montgomerie, Casey, Luke Donald, Faxon, tons of really great golfers with no majors.

Fowler won the Players. Ricky needs one major to tie Freddie Couples on the all time major list.

Was it just this weekend that you realized he will most likely not do it? The guy has fought major demons in the game for a while. This isn’t some sort of shocking take here. With that being said Phil Mickelson won his first major at the age of 34. How many does he have now? Rickie is 34. He’s got time to get it done.

Rickie has time, but he isn’t someone that is constantly putting himself in contention, so it isn’t really hot take to say he won’t win one.

He may, but he needs to start putting himself there more often before it becomes anything outside of a one hit wonder chance

He missed a good chance, but that course didn’t really fit his game. He took advantage of a hot putter for the first two days, He couldn’t keep,it going and overcome hitting 2 clubs more into every green than Clark and Mcilroy.

His swing is really looking good these days. Xander is the one I am worried about. He doesn't seem to have the mental game to win a major. I think Rickie just had a bad day, and it started with the missed put on 18 Saturday night.

In rounds 2 and 3, rickie gained more strokes tee to green than he did putting. Round 1 was essentially even, +4.77 SG Putt and +4.61 SG T2G.

Where is the evidence for this course strongly favoring bombers? Based on the results, it seemed to favor good ball strikers regardless of their length.
Cam Smith, Fleetwood, Fowler, Tom Kim, Ekroat, Morikawa, Henley all in the top 15. Scheffler and McIlroy are long but also 2 of the 3 best players in the world and elite ball strikers

Valhalla, Quail, Pinehurst should set up well for him. But same could be said for 20-25 others.

And then there is just randomness at the Open.

He's the only player to have multiple top 5 finishes in all 4 majors and not win one of them. He's been in contention multiple times.

I am talking about right now. If Rickie regains his consistently and form from before, and starts getting top 10s week in and week out, my feelings about him winning a major will be a lot better

He is getting there, but not there quite yet

He has 7 top 10s in 18 starts. He also has 11, 13, 17, 15, and 14 finishes. So he's finished in the top 17 in 12 of his 18 starts this year. He's been A LOT closer to great form than he has been in years

-8 after day 1 and finish 5th. He never recovered from the missed put on the 18th on day 3.

Actually this is a tough one when you break it down

There will be roughly 25-30 different major champions over the next 10 years. Rickie is def someone if I listed out who I think is most to least lonely to win a major, he is likely in the top 30

That’s how you have to do these things, sure you say Rickie is a choke artist in majors, but can you actually name 25-30 golfers you would bet on the next 10 years to win a major over Rickie? You are going to have to pick A BUNCH of golfers that have also never proven they can win a major in order to do so

Golfers who have actually won a major that have a chance the next 10 years

Rahm
Brooks
Scottie
Bryson
DJ (he will be aging though at the end of the 10 years)
Rory
Hideki
JT
Fitzpatrick
Cam
Spieth
Reed
Phil (his age will age him out of this)
Clark

So that’s 14 golfers. So for you to realistically be confident Rickie won’t win, you have to bet on all the above guys to win again and 11-16 other never before major winners winning one instead, or you can think guys like Webb Simpson, duffner, Molinari, willet, etc have a better chance than Rickie simply because they won before

If Vegas did odds, I think Rickie would be favored to win a major before death

It’s ok to not win a major.

Fowler has more talent than 99.999999% of people who ever picked up a club.

I agree. But golf isn’t tennis, the majors aren’t hogged all that much. Over the next 40 majors, there will be 25-30 different winners

This argument is dumb. He won the players which has the toughest competition in golf…tougher than the majors because it doesn’t have all the amateurs of the opens, limited field of the masters, and club pros of the PGA. And he won it by going low on the back nine on Sunday then hitting an incredible shot in the playoffs. I don’t know why the Players isn’t considered a major because it’s arguably the hardest to win, but since it doesn’t have that label it gets way under appreciated.

I know that the LIV defectors may have changed that but he won it when virtually all of the worlds best golfers were on the PGA tour

My thought is he’ll be like Sergio. He’ll eventually get 1, and that will be it. Sergio just wanted one so bad, that when he got it, he was done. Ricky’s bad luck this week was tearing it up the first three days. It was the kiss of death to lead the first three days as that’s almost impossible to maintain. I wish he would have stayed with Butch Harmon.
