Have 5 full days in Maui at end of July, staying in VRBO in Kihei. Any suggestions for must-do excursions? Have two teen kids. Plan for snorkeling, of course. Horseback riding? ATV? Aquarium? Road to Hana? Fishing? Our schedule is open.

Has anyone done charter fishing out of Maui?

How about ATV rental for the teens?

Day trip to Oahu for Pearl Harbor Memorial?

We did day trip to Oahu
Try and do it on front or back end of trip so you are not rushed

We flew to Oahu and back middle of our trip
We had to rent a car to get around, no Uber back then
We did Pearl Harbor and several things

Traffic can get hectic on that island as it’s the main city

Totally doable but a long day and with only 5 days, I would skip unless this is the only time you ever expect to go to Hawaii.

Think I'm going to skip Oahu and just stay in Maui. Has anybody fished out of Maui? Curious about that.

We just did the Road to Hana with our 2 teens 2 weeks ago. We loved it! Here’s a few tips:
Start early! We were in Paia by 8am and didn’t get back until dark. It’s a long day!
Download the Guide Along app. It will know your location and tell you what stops to make. It was incredibly useful.
Make a reservation for the black sand beach … it’s at a state park. The reservation system opens abt 30 days in advance, I think. Well worth the stop!
Go past Hana for the best waterfalls! Definitely a highlight of the trip!

I fished out of Lahaina in Sept 2019. The guy that I went with leaves really early - Eli eve 1:30 am to get to a buoy way out there. It was a long rough ride but he put us on the black tuna and Dolphin/Mahi. Had plenty of fish to grill up at our place.

I assumed it would be a closer location to the fish but glad I did it.

Yes, drive the entire circuit dont turn around at Hana the back side is awesome. You can also make it to the Haleakala National Park in the afternoon on the way back. Long day = Great Day!!

As of 2 weeks ago, a part of the back road was closed due to a landslide. So you have to return the way that you came (i.e., can't make a loop). I'm not sure how long it will be closed for so definitely stop at the National Park Visitor Center to ask before driving any further.

Yes, but do one of the tours where you bike down afterwards. Simply awesome.

Funny side story--there is an annual bike race UP Haleakala called "Cycle to the Sun". Since you'd have to be a maniac to do that it's affectionately known by locals as "Psychos to the Sun".

The road to Hana will bring down anyone susceptible to motion sickness. I did it once but won’t go back.

We wore motion sickness bands for the Road to Hana so that helped. One of our kids slept the whole way back to avoid getting sick. The way there was fine because we stopped so many times.

You have to reserve a pass in advance for the sunrise at Haleakala, but not for the sunset. I've heard it's just as awesome as the sunrise. But after doing the Road to Hana, we had enough of mountain drives for one week!

Does anyone have a snorkel boat recommendation? We are headed over there with 4 kids at just about the same time and staying in Kihei.

I've been told this one was good, though haven't had a chance to use them myself.
