Correct.
If he took something truly harmful, he deserves it.
I imagine this is just a witch hunt though. But he is dumb for taking documents that have ever been classified.

How about applying the "once they leave office" to security clearances also. There are a huge amount of dod, cia, state dept, national security type folks who hold on their status for personal gain

Agree ... that is insane.

Do you not understand that they are copies, the originals are in DC for all presidents. This witch hunt is not about document position, it's about stopping the people from electing Trump.

Easily the best answer.

I'm assuming there is a formal process for docs going to Presidential LIbraries. I suspect they don't put (currently) highly sensitive documents at them. These are on public display for "We the People". That is a good thing. That is not some arrogant former elected official deciding that they deserve to take something that does not belong to them.

Wouldn’t it declassify immediately once they put it in a situation it would have had to be declassified? As I see it, the problem is that the Drafters of the Constitution started from the premise that anyone elected POTUS would be a person of good character and would not misuse information that came into his possession. I am uncertain that this premise remains valid.
Why does that matter?it seems like a slippery slope.

Only the ones that Brandon took. The rest are not ok

Trumps case isn’t about classified docs in the end, but I’ll say this… if “no reasonable prosecutor would pursue a case” against a SOS caught with classified material on an illegal secret server, who destroyed evidence under subpoena, then how tf do you prosecute this?

Don't want to make the thread about any specific people, but agree 100%.

... I'll answer it ... without signing off by the National Archives, or appropriate department ... NONE... whether that person declassified them or not. They don't belong to them... they belong to us. The arrogance to think they deserve them.
Neither can you.
What documents did Trump have?
Were they still relevant to anything?

I think the gov't should have to PROVE to a civilian review board why certain docs SHOULD be classified. There are very, very few things that the gov't should be allowed to keep secret.

President: anything they want. It's a safeguard that hasn't gotten used as much as it should.
We elect presidents, not cia or military big wigs.

You do realize Cater declassified our top secret surveillance program on TV back on Oct 1,1978.
That's just what comes with being president.

The hysteria over "classified" documents is laughable. There should be almost zero documents that are classified.
THIS is the correct answer to the entire situation. Every time some a-hole at the NSA scribbles a note on a pad, it gets stamped with a Top Secret heading.
The government didn't declassify the formula for invisible ink for 80 YEARS... even after it was already being marketed as a kid's toy.
The whole thing is absurd.

Any that they had already declassified
