7 upstate NY HS Seniors choose prom over State softball semi-finals

They're still in school? Their prom is in June?

School in New York goes until the end of June and starts the day after Labor Day.

Kinda selfish to bail on your commitment
If you have plans well before things like that, shite happens.
My senior prom date would have missed if they had made the state finals (they didn’t) and I would have missed the playoffs one year in football if it had gone into Thanksgiving break because of a previously scheduled trip but the coach knew about the latter before the season started.
Selfish? Yes. But making plans for Prom are expensive and require a lot of lead time.

Well, of course they had to choose. If the coach cut them, it doesn’t make any sense, as they’re seniors deciding not to play their last games.
No way I could skip an opportunity for a state championship over fricking prom.

All schools in the northeast do this. It's also routinely still in the 30s and 40s in May up there, so Beach/outdoor season doesn't start until about mid-late June and ends Labor Day, when kids in the South have already been in school for 3+ weeks.
Seasonal truly means seasonal there (beach bewch clubs and restaurants only open 3 months/yr) not like the west coast and South where ppl are going to the lake and the beach in mid-late March and early April.

Need pics to determine what choice they should have made

It does if they won without the 7 that skipped and they were cut from the championship game.

This is the exact kind of self-absorbed crap that is an epidemic with this current generation and their parents.
You chose to join that team. The other members of that team put in the same amount of work or likely more to reach the goal of competing for a championship and we're counting on you to be there and give your best, but you'll just shite all over them because it's just not what I'd rather do right now. disgusting.
Worst part is parents won't yank a knot in their arse and make them damn well fulfil their commitment and explain that sometimes on life you have to miss out on things, due to other commitments.

True but as a parent of a daughter who’s a senior grad (no pics) I also understand. These kids have likely been playing year round softball for a decade and only get one chance at senior prom. I know my daughter gave up tons of fun things over the years for softball, so I understand.

Article says semis Friday, finals Saturday. Prom Saturday.

I wouldn't be surprised if the seniors skipping the game are bench-warmers for the most part. The gung-ho softball kids would prioritize the game over prom, if I had to guess.

I wouldn't do it. But for girls, prom is a once in a lifetime opportunity. They've dreamed about dressing up in a long gown and go to prom since they were 7. Softball may be something they just decided to do for fun or to hang out with friends.
When I was in high school, I didn't care that much about prom. I still went, but I wasn't particularly excited. But for the girls, it was all they could talk about for the entire second semester of school year. They were more excited for prom than they were graduation.

The interesting part is that statement makes it sound like they were given the option to either skip prom and be apart of a potential championship game, if they beat the top ranked team in the Semis; or be cut and don't get to play in the Semis.
If this is true, coach backed them into the corner and forced them to make a decision of attending prom, or playing in a game that isn't guaranteed to happen.
Not faulting the coach, as he most likely needed to make the accommodations for the entire weekend since the games would be Friday & Saturday; and there would be no shot to fill those 7 spots if the girls played and won Friday, then went back home for prom.

I mean, technically, that is exactly what happened. They were committed to going to prom, and so they missed out on their softball game.

It's rarely below 45 for a low temp even on May 1 in NYC, so.

I understand the troll here, but commitment and responsibility are really easy. Prom is always scheduled early and so are the high school playoffs. You know that those dates may overlap when you sign up and commit to the team.
This all comes down to what I and my kid want is more important than the other people on the team that I committed to.
Multiple people in the thread espousing those exact thoughts. It's why high school sports are going to shite. Committing to a team, especially at the high school level is about putting something above self, but so many in this generation refuse to do that, but still want to be a part of a team. Why am I not playing, why am I not playing the position I want, I have to miss for this, I have to miss for that, blah, blah, selfish, nothing is more important than me and what I want right now.
