to your bill? i highly doubt that.
Have you never let your kids play with the water hose, have a sprinkler running, etc? a busted pipe is no different than watering your plants for 2 hours.

I filled up a 13,000 gallon pool twice in one month. The bill for that was like $20 more than it usually was.

or, you know, have a neighbor turn the water off or call the water company to do it.

Do you not own a phone?

By this logic security cameras are dumb because if you're out of town you can't catch the thief if it goes off.

Yeah it's pretty cool that I can have my water turned off when required, whether I'm out of town or at work or sleeping.

Again I ask, who is shutting off the water main before they leave for work? Unless you spend 4 months out of town every year a pipe is far more likely to burst while you're at work.

You guys are quadrupling down on the dumbass.

who is so worried about a water leak that they buy a device to let them know if it leaks when they aren't home?
Do you have earthquake insurance as well?

you're going to really freak when you hear about kork's breaker-box doohicky that can tell you how much energy each appliance is using based on its unique 'energy signature'.

everyone who bought the little wifi leak detectors from amazon they stick on the laundry room floor should also take them back as a 'dumb' idea too i suppose.

some of us are geeks and like to know what's going on with the water, gas & electricity in real time and not from a monthly bill.

Put the water hose in your attic and let it run for 2 hours and get back to me

Me and OP and millions more. Water leaks are an extremely common and expensive problem, and almost all of it is hidden inside walls or underground. Who wouldn't want to know about a leak as soon as possible?

If I could pay a couple hundred dollars one time for an early warning system that can avoid the majority of damage and cost, yes I'd buy it.

I’ve got a Flume and love it. It hasn’t detected any leaks and hopefully never will need to. It has detected that I’m a moron and left the water running to fill up the pool.

Not to hijack but does anybody have the newer version of Flume? I think it’s version 2 and might have a monthly subscription for it. I have the original one. I have to change the batteries in it pretty often and it keeps asking if I want to upgrade. Didn’t know if anybody had experience with the newer model.

And how is this leak detector stopping this damage from occurring while you aren’t home?

If it happens while I'm at work then I can shut off the water asap to minimize the damage.

How is your lack of a monitor going to do it? Again, are you shutting your water main off daily when you leave for work?

I have version 2 and a subscription is not required. The subscription was always optional, but I think they've done away with it altogether and the additional features are now free. The app tells me I've been granted a lifetime membership at no charge. They might have bumped the purchase price by $50 to compensate.

My original battery back lasted 12 months. They are lithium batteries but instead of buying a new pack I am experimenting with alkalines. The voltage curve is very different so as expected it reports the batteries as low and needing replacement, but so far been running 6 months on them. However their lithium replacement packs are very reasonably priced ($15) and I would recommend buying it.

No complaints for me with flume 2.

your device shuts off your water remotely?

No, but I can go home and shut it off or have someone do it. Because I will know when I have a leak at any time of any day no matter where I am. Because I have a water monitor.

If that makes you sleep better at night, then cool.

Get a bulldog valve robot and you can kill it from anywhere.

It absolutely does. I can't imagine sleeping better being ignorant to potential water leaks in my home or yard.

Will do. Counting batteries every 12 months or so my total 10 year cost will be about $300 or $30 per year all in. I consider it one of my strongest purchases. For that cost I will know about any slow leak 2 hours after it starts whether I'm home and awake or sleeping, or away at work or wherever. I have tested my meter and it divides a gallon into 60 "ticks" or about 2 ounces per tick. So my Flume knows about every 2 ounces that pass through the meter and will absolutely notify me of a leak of 2 ounces per minute (or a gallon per hour) or greater. That could realistically be the difference between a few gallon mess that I can clean up and let dry out vs. a huge mess and drywall or other repairs.

I am not certain if it will notify about slower leaks than that (because it reports each minute and a slower leak will show 2 ounces and then several minutes of 0 ounces before another minute of 2 ounces), but I am running a test right now dripping a faucet at about a quart per hour to see if I get a notification.

And fast leaks like a burst pipe I will be notified in 4 minutes. And to reiterate, my house is unoccupied for about 2,500 hours each year. Only about 500 of those am I out of town, the other 2,000 hours are when no one is home on a day to day basis. And there are another 3,000 hours when the house is occupied by unconscious people. I bet yours is similar. So odds are that if you spring a catastrophic leak you won't be saved by shutting your water off only when you go out of town. You are far more likely to come home from work and find several thousand gallons of water in your home. I am more likely to be home within the hour. I will still have a big mess, but it'll be a lot smaller than yours and I will salvage a lot more.

So if that's all I get for $30/year, then it's well worth it for that peace of mind and I cannot think of a better insurance policy.

But that's not all I get. There is a whole lot more.

The pushback here blows my mind guys. Why would I shut my water off 5 or 6 times per year for that peace of mind when for $150 (the new model might be $250) I not only don't have to remember to shut off the main but I also get peace of mind 24/7 when I'm asleep or at work or whatever? Additionally, I get consumption data and I know how much my water bill will be before I get it.

You can get them used for like $50 too. Beyond a no brainer at that point.
