Diamond Sports Group has decided not to pay the San Diego Padres their latest rights fee, a monumental development that will revert the team's broadcasting rights to Major League Baseball and establish precedent for an uncertain, rapidly evolving landscape
quote:
Diamond, the Sinclair subsidiary that operates under the name Bally Sports, skipped its payment to the Padres a couple of weeks ago and had until the end of its grace period on Tuesday to make the team whole and maintain their long-term agreement. Choosing not to meant Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins was the last Padres game under the Bally Sports umbrella. Moving forward -- starting Wednesday, continuing through the end of the season and resuming in perpetuity -- MLB will air Padres games through its streaming service and on different cable channels.

Dick Enberg would give a sad "oh my" if he were still with us

Hopefully the org assist and accommodates Orsillo and Mud. For those who don't know, San Diego may have the best broadcast crew in baseball.

I think eventually MLB will have to take over all the rights for any team that Sinclair owns rights to.
Padres TV deal was 20 years for 1.2B when signed with Fox Sports. Guessing MLB will be making up the shortfall. Curious to see how much they can absorb before the TV bubble bursts

MLB can't pay out all the Sinclair rights deals without going broke itself.
If the league doesn't have TV rights revenue, it will go belly up quicker than a teenager at a strip club. They abandoned the gate revenue model long ago.

I hope these assholes skip their payment to the Braves ASAP.

The regional sports networks like Bally Sports and AT&T sports are going under and don't have the money to broadcast MLB and NHL, and those leagues are about to be in a major pickle. The NBA is a little better off because they are less tied into that model but these leagues and teams aren't going to have a way to broadcast the majority of their games pretty soon.

With it, the Padres become the first MLB team to offer in market streaming independent of a TV subscription. $20 a month or $75 for a year.

I am hoping teams follow what the Phoenix Suns are going to do and put most of their games on free OTA. Millions more will have access to games in a market versus those who buy cable or satellite and maybe the bigger numbers can lead to more advertising dollars to make this financially viable and profitable.
Also, it would be nice if all of Sinclair Broadcasting went down the toilet, but that won't likely happen.
