I think you did the right thing. He needs a reality check and needs to realize he and his wife need to make some big changes and learn to live within their means. If he was falling on hard times, that would be one thing. To knowingly buy excessive amount of things you can't afford and then run to friends for money is ridiculous.

We live frugally and live simply. We worked hard to get out debt when we were first married and have chosen to never over leverage ourselves. We are happy to give to people who are truly in need. I refuse to give to someone who has way nicer things than I do because they are in debt up to their eyeballs. If I wanted to waste money, I would waste on myself and my family not subsidizing someone else's bad decisions.

Why cant he do monthly payments on the insurance?
He can also call the mortgage company and they can pay the insurance and they will add it on to their mortgage expenses. Your mortgage company does not want that house to go uninsured as they have a vested interest in it.
It will likely be more than he would have paid had he just paid it outright himself but he ought to used to the consequences of his stupid fiscal decisions by now.

You teaching him a lesson his parents never taught him: Take care of yourself and your family. Put your family’s well-being ahead of buying toys

So ole baw is still spending money like it's burning a hole in his pocket but wants a handout from you.
Stories like this make more sense of the fact that 60% of Americans don't have $1000 saved for an emergency.

I would have asked the same, and still wouldn't give him any money as a loan. You either give or let him earn it doing some work stuff, but I never lend to friends and family.

Pretty sure this is how most young folks are going to seaside and 30A for the week for summer .. get the grandparents to fund it and go and be the babysitter as well

Sounds like he is hiding the money problems from his wife

Had dinner with them on Friday night. Money problems were not brought up. Acted like everything was normal. They were about to leave for a week in Orange Beach staying at Turquoise Place. Her parents were going and likely paying for that trip.
Do the wives usually set up these dinners?

Putting updates on page 17 of a thread is dumb
