They didn’t ask for mine at the rental counter in Santorini. Will let you know when we get to Naxos. It’s one of those things where if I didn’t have it it would be the first thing they ask for

The Athenian House was a great place, but the staff seemed new, they have only been open 2 weeks this season. One of the servers apologized to us for messing up the setting. He said he was new to the job. I have no complaints about the food, it was all excellent. Just not exactly what we enjoy for that price.

Yeah a lot of these people are new every year and don't open until mid May so I can understand that.

I may have the reverse problem. I have heard that when you start getting to the end of the tourist season, August/September, that Santorini service people have gone through such an absolute shitshow crush of people, that they can be a bit ornery by that point

We headed to Naxos Tuesday from Santorini on the SeaJet.
The ferry experience is cool, basically a herd of people waiting with luggage, cafes lining the port with servers hollering at you to come eat while you wait. I can imagine it’s miserable in the summer heat.
Basically everyone is asking everyone else if this is the right line to be in, actually kind of comical after a while.
The ferry arrived, backed in and cars/motorcycles exited then the people came down the ramp. Once they offloaded they told us to board. Mass chaos. A line 100 feet wide trying to squeeze onto a ramp 30 feet wide. And everyone has a rolling suitcase. Once on board you can stow your luggage based on where you are heading. Each rack has a sign stating with port. Don’t worry if the racks are full you can stand your luggage up on the floor next to it. The boat is so big it doesn’t rock so the bags do not fall over.
Also, you don’t have to be in a hurry to get in line. If you have your ticket, sit at a cafe and you will see the boat come in and the line swells. But it’s at least another 10 mins before you begin boarding. Take your time and once you see the line thin, go ahead and walk right on. The Sea Jet HAULS arse, and it was a really neat experience. We were barely off the boat and they took off leaving as the ramp was still going up.

Naxos is 180 degrees different than Santorini. The promenade along the marina is beautiful. Wide walkable streets as opposed to Santorini’s narrow alleys. You can drift up the hill into Chora proper to find beautiful white walls with flowers draping down.
We are staying in Stelida, about a 10 min drive from town. It’s a great location.
We went back to town last night for an amazing dinner at Dal Professore on the promenade. Not to belabor, but it was a 50 euro meal that was every bit as good as Athenian House- at least for us. Anyway, we finished dinner around 8 and walked to the Portara Gate of Apollo for sunset. Our first Greek sunset and it was even better than advertised.
We strolled back through town and got an ice cream and headed back home.
We are on the beach today in Plaka. Slept in and had breakfast at a cafe on the beach. We then walked down and found a nice spot with an umbrella and waiter service. We are parked here now for the rest of the afternoon.

We can already say that we like Naxos better than Santorini. Not that it was bad- we loved Santorini, but Naxos is bigger and I prefer the walkways and beaches rather than the cliffs and caves of Santorini. And everything here is wayyy cheaper than Santorini. We loved our 2.5 days there, but I think it was just enough.

Sorry for the wall of text but I’m on mobile and may have already had a few beach beers :)

Funny you say this because I haven’t seen anything about a massage until 5 mins ago when an Asian lady came walking down the beach with a sign offering couples massages lol

Nice. I’m glad I chose Naxos last for a change of pace. Mrs jkyle is all about us getting a couples massage so so gonna keep checking out places for that online. Will prob not book anything before we leave though. May just walk in somewhere or look for the Asian lady. Glad you got a good sunset and are having a good time. We take that same ferry but are on the arse early 6am one so maybe there’ll be less chaos at that time or day. Keep the posts coming.

I was amazed at how quickly they could turn over one of those ferries. Much faster than an airline.

We are also going to Greece in a few days. Athens -> Santorini -> Crete. Our travel agent sent us this site for massages in Santorini. Apparently they will come to you but I contacted them a few days ago and have not heard back.

Feel the same way about Santorini. It’s gorgeous and really interesting, but give me a quiet greek island away from the maddening crowds.

Posting from our apartment in Athens. Today is our last day in Greece, we fly out of ATH tomorrow at 10:00 am.

We spent 2 full days at the beach in Naxos- we drove around and decided on Plaka beach. Soft golden sand and plenty of beach setups with enough space not to feel crowded. We had breakfast at a cafe each morning then walked across the road to the beach chairs. We used Caya for our setups both days. Comfortable chairs and good food/drink service. We paid 20 euro per day for the setup.
Our last day in Naxos we caught an Olympic/Aegean Air flight out at 17:50. We spent the day driving through the small villages- Chalkio, Filoti, and Apeiranthos. Chalkio was the prettiest, while the other 2 were smaller but higher in elevation so there were some great views.
We got to the airport at 5, very basic setup. We lined up to check in and they weighed your checked luggage. Then we waited for the plane to come in. It was a turboprop and the turnaround time from landing to our takeoff was 20 mins. This airport only services Greek territories, so it was very small and no frills. The flight was only about 35 mins.
We had a driver arranged through our AirBnB in Athens to take us to the apartment. The airport is about 45 mins from town. We are on the top floor of a building with a great view of the Acropolis. Man is it breathtaking. It’s beautiful at night, the entire hill is lit up.
We had dinner in Plaka at a beautiful taverna. So many of these places with seats out on the narrow steps. Very cool.

We spent the first full day here hitting all the ancient sites. We had already bought tickets for the Parthenon and other sites. The Parthenon opens at 8 and we arrived at 7:35 and were second in line. We hauled arse up there and got some photos without anyone else in them. We spent a little over an hour at the top, when we were heading down the line going up was very heavy. We then went the to the Acropolis museum- it is beautiful. Very modern and holds lots of ancient artifacts and original pieces from the Parthenon.
Other stops included the Greek and Roman Agoras, Hadrian’s Arch, Temple of Zeus, and the Olympic stadium where the torch is lit to begin the relay for every games.
We had lunch at a rooftop overlooking Monastiraki square, then back to the apartment before dinner.
Today we slept in, watched the changing of the guard at Parliament, and then had brunch. We walked through the national garden which is similar to Central Park. We rode the cable car to the top of Lycabettus Hill for some amazing views of the city. It is the highest point and you can see all the way to the ocean with the Acropolis in the foreground.
We then wandered through the streets of Kolonaki and Plaka, had a freedom cappuccino and just watched the people walk by.
Back in the room now packing up. One last dinner and then out early tomorrow to the airport. It’s been a great week. Once we get home I may have time to sit down and do a proper recap- but we have loved every minute of this vacation.

Also , temps don’t look to be going much over 70 for the highs. I’m wondering if we’ll even want to swim.

Nut up and swim, you'll be glad you did.

Yeah, it's cold, but you acclimate relatively quickly and how many opportunities does one get to swim in the Aegean?

I’m always amazed how much of the developed world you can’t drink the water in but every rural small town in America has a water plant capable of safe water.

It's not unsafe, it's just a little salty. Must be cheaper to import bottled water than to desalinate.

Small towns are great, but then you have Flint and Jackson.

A couple of notes on Naxos for future reference:

One night for dinner, be sure to go to To Elliniko - LINK

If you are looking for a nice trip incorporating food, try Naxos Cultural Tours for the Cultural Food Tour, Villages of Naxos - they do groups, bt you can also arrange to do it privately. LINK

In Naxos Town, do the cheese tasting at Naxos Cheese Koufopoulos. LINK /

We had dinner at To Elleniko and loved it. The courtyard is so beautiful. Their food was amazing- simple yet so good. The staff was lovely, we stopped by the night prior to our reservation to adjust the time and when we showed up the next night the manager called us by name. Had great banter with the waitress and wound up getting one of their staff t shirts! The orange pie with ice cream is a must for dessert.
We also ate at Doukato, but found it lacking in food and service compared to To Elleniko.

We spent 2 days at Plaka beach. The second day we said screw it and went in for about 10 minutes. It was cold but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity. Felt amazingly refreshed after.

Sounds like you had an awesome time. Def gonna check out that restaurant in Naxos. Peeped their menu and it looks good and very reasonable. Flying out tomorrow and I’m so excited. Hopefully Air France outta Iah is timely”ish” with our flights bc we only have 1:45 min layover at CDG. Thanks for all your feedback. Much. Appreciated.
