I guess I didn't realize Mack was going any time soon. How old is he?

Mack will likely be at UT another 4-5 years.

Obviously, this has been in the works all season long and mayber earlier before Muschamp was hired at UT. Expediated due to the high-profile jobs popping up in the SEC, ACC.

That's dumb. A lot can change in five years. Bad idea, for both parties, to lock yourself in.

He will be stupid to take this, Mack has 8 years left on his contract, and UT fans will be screaming Major Applewhite's name around that time; Muschamp would be smart to take the money now and consider this job later, look how well it is playing out for Jimbo.... (haha)

UT feels he is worth the gamble. He's brought a toughness to the Texas program that was lacking.

This year's Texas team shouldn't be in the position they are in with a young secondary.

yea imo i would rather a coach go to a small school maybe take his lumps but learn on the job then come back and get the big time job.

Agreed. I think he should take the Clemson job and if he kicks arse there UT will pay even more to bring him back

I agree. This is becoming a trend in the pros, too. I think it will ultimately create dissention among the coaching staff and the team. It's like the backup QB being the most popular guy on the team. As soon as the HC struggles, the fans start screaming for the other guy, and the players know who the real power player is. Lame duck scenarios, etc.

How much has the defense actually improved at Texas?

2008:
110th in passing D
4th in rushing D
58th in total D
25th in scoring

2007:
109th in passing D
6th in rushing D
52nd in total D
45th in scoring

The Saban coaching tree is alive and well...and growing.

Even though they are mediocre as shite, especially Jimbo.

I think its just a move to lock him up and avoid losing yet another DC. I'm not sure he's a 100% lock to get the job. Kind of the down side to making that big name DC hire. They aren't there for long, which is another reason I am pro Greg Robinson for LSU.

I'd imagine the UT fan favorite Applewhite will get a serious look

This is just a ploy to keep Clemson, Tennessee, and what ever other jobs come availble in the coming weeks away from Muschamp, he is stupid to not take the big money at another program and get on the job training; I don't see Texas retaining him long...

Details of the contract are still being finalized but it will start with Muschamp's salary being raised to $900,000 on January 1, 2009.
