US homeland security chief says border crossings are down 50% since Title 42 expiration

Story by Reuters • 7h ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. border patrol agents have seen a 50% drop in the number of migrants crossing the border since the pandemic-era immigration policy known as Title 42 expired at midnight on Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said on CNN's "State of the Union" program on Sunday.

"Over the past two days, the United States Border Patrol has experienced a 50% drop in the number of encounters versus what we were experiencing earlier in the week before Title 42 ended at midnight on Thursday," Mayorkas said.

"It is still early. We are in day three. But we have been planning for this transition for months and months."

Mayorkas said that U.S. Border Patrol agents had about 6,300 encounters with border-crossers on Friday and another 4,200 on Saturday, compared with more than 10,000 shortly before Title 42's expiration.

Are there less "encounters" because there's nothing to enforce, or because there are less people crossing? Words have meanings.

Normally there would be more outrage from the right, but half of them are foaming at the mouth, hysterically obsessed with disparaging Donald Trump on behalf of the left.

We've had all border patrol agents close their eyes this week and they've seen 100% less border crossings than before

If Mayorkas had a Pinocchio nose, we could walk to Mars along it.

They are documenting NOTHING with most of them, so no official encounter

If they reported number of people crossing your eyes would pop out of your eyesockets

It’s crazy how far we’ve fallen in such a short period of time. Obama’s lying media propagandists used to twist the definition of “deportation” to be able to claim Obama had record numbers of deportations. Now, the measure of success is the lack of interactions between illegals and law enforcement.

Yuma is wide open, they just opened the gate at the entry point.

If anyone wants to make a drug run on the Mexican pharmaceuticals, you can come in, straight through Yuma.

According to people I know who live close to the border, crossings are not down.

I’m sure this administration has found some obscure statistics that says they have.

We have arrived. It's no longer a dystopian prediction; we are there.

Last report I heard from Todd Bensman was a lot of illegals are being processed in Mexico by the US and when they’re transported across the border they are not counted as illegal immigrants but as refugees.

not surprised, we may as well have them work and prop up the dying system (because it's being killed) a little longer.
