In a shocking and last-minute turn of events in Texas, a bill that would raise the minimum age to purchase AR-15 style semiautomatic rifles from 18 to 21 passed out of a House committee Monday, advancing the measure hours before a key deadline.

Several Uvalde victims' relatives burst into sobs and cheers in the Capitol hearing room when two Republicans joined all the Democrats on the committee to advance the bill by an 8-5 vote.

“I'm feeling very overwhelmed, very emotional,” Kimberly Garcia said through tears after the committee vote. Her 10-year-old daughter, Amerie Jo Garza, was one of the 19 fourth graders and two teachers killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, 2022.

“I was super worried, but I feel like my daughter did this, and I feel like she's making a difference, and I'm proud of her. I hate that it's come down to this, but I know that she's always with me, and I know that I'm not going to let anyone ever forget her," Garcia said.

Uvalde victims' relatives have been advocating for lawmakers to pass House Bill 2744 for months, coming to the Capitol nearly every week during the legislative session to demand its passage and even waiting more than 13 hours to testify in support of the bill in a committee hearing in April.

Their unrelenting push for lawmakers to pass gun control legislation has been an uphill battle in a Republican-dominated Legislature that has loosened gun restrictions in recent sessions. Monday’s vote, however, was a significant victory for the families.

Sounds unconstitutional

Guess if you are in TX just get a Ruger Mini-14 at 18 instead of a scary-looking AR-15 since they are the same gun

I've asked a dozen progressives about the Ruger Mini 14, and they're all clueless.

I assume it causes cognitive confusion as they try to reconcile a hunting rifle and a "weapon of war" which do the exact same thing.

These people are fools! If you believe a law like this will reduce crime you are a complete idiot!

If this passes, and Abbott signs this, he's toast nationally. This is unconstitutional and just feel good legislation to assuage the left's feelings.

Doesn't matter if it passes or not. The other side is advancing the ball, and we are regressing. They will keep pushing, the fact this could pass a committee in f*cking Texas, means we aren't far off.

Those cucked Republicans that went along with this need to be out of a job today.

I use my AR308 for bear protection. Semi auto is superior to higher firepower.

Agree but, many restrictions have been loosened which, is as it should be.

"The bill still faces an uphill climb to becoming law in Texas. The state has regularly loosened gun restrictions over a period of roughly a dozen years, during which it has also experienced nine mass shootings.

House Speaker Dade Phelan said earlier this year that he does not believe HB 2744 has the votes to pass the chamber but that he won’t stand in the way of it being debated. A similar bill in the Senate has not yet received a hearing. And Gov. Greg Abbott has said the law would not be constitutional."

Yea, I think the left gained any traction in Texas on gun control says quite alot. This would be equivalent to a pro-life bill getting out of committee in California.

So let me get this straight just so I’m not confused. Mass murder/shooting people is already illegal correct? Soooooo, these people don’t follow laws anyway right? What is adding 3 more years to buy the “big scary gun” going to do? You can’t outlaw immorality. Bad people are gonna do bad shite, regardless of laws. Drugs are illegal right? How’s that war on drugs going since who, Regan? Stupid

Unconstitutional unless age of majority changes for everything else.

they're just chomping at the bit to pass anything gun related. since all gun laws are unconstitutional.
