I’m thinking about doing a road trip the summer around Texas and southern New Mexico.
I’m looking for some fun roadside attractions, like they had back in the day along Route 66.

Maybe hit Marfa and Big Bend.

I know about these caves in Texas that look pretty cool.

I thought Round Top, TX was neat. Never heard of the place before driving through it. With the name theantiquetiger, it may be your type of thing as it is a famous antiques destination in the middle of nowhere.

I’ve heard of Round Top. A lot of people I see at garage and estate sales talk about it. I just imagine it’s like a giant antique village, like in Denham Springs, but much larger.

I’m not familiar with Denham Springs, but it took me driving through to realize the antiques significance. When driving through it first felt like a very historic farming community. It wasn’t until leaving town when every farm, then later more warehouse buildings pop up that you see it is major antiques destination.

It stood out because it wasn’t like anywhere else nearby. I was only there because I went to Snow BBQ in Lexington and was looping back towards San Antonio on the backroads.

Round Top holds antique weekends at least twice a year. Both of those sell out hotels, etc for miles around. It is also a very popular destination for bridesmaids and other ladies trips. This time of year it will be crowded on weekends. Some stores close on Monday. It is a real cool little town where we go often.

Cadillac Ranch (bunch of old cars half buried nose down) is just off I-40 in Amarillo.

We went to Natural Bridge Caverns about a month ago for the first time. We've been to several similar caves in CO, SD, etc. Natural Bridge Caverns was by far the hottest and most humid I've ever been in. Also they either just opened an entire new branch or they are opening it very soon.

Some of those places (Hamilton Pool for sure) need reservations.

Go into old town Amarillo see Route 66 era diners and stores. Weekends there will be lots of old cars cruising Route 66 there.

Yep, I think most of the places on the OPs map you need reservations and depending on the time of year, they are tough to get.

We’ve done that on our last road trip. It’s cool, but a little out of our way. We want to stay south this time, probably make Cloudcroft/White Sands our turn around point.

Here’s the photo vlog of our last trip.

You mentioned southern NM as well. Carlsbad Caverns in NM is cool - just north across the state line from Guadelupe Mtns National Park in TX, which has the highest point in TX -Guadelupe Peak. The peak has a trail to the top - 8,750' elevation with 3,000' elevation gain over about 8 miles, so it's an all day kind of thing.

Guadelupe is near Salt Flat, TX where there are ... salt flats. Watch the speed - drops quickly from 75 or 80 mph in Salt Flat to 55 in the national park. I learned the hard way that the judge in Salt Flat TX answers the phones herself at the courthouse when you call to try to plea bargain.

White Sands National Park is not far from there, as well as the Organ Mtns near Las Cruces NM. Las Cruces is a decent sized town (over 200k) and has a giant road runner sculpture and the world's largest chile pepper. Near White Sands is the world's largest pistachio.

Time of year is relevant - it's hot in summer of course (though we were there in July and found it more bearable than S. LA due to low humidity).

eta: pic of Guadelupe Mtns and salt flats, from a 2006 trip from LA to Santa Barbara and back.

I like Hueco Tanks outside of El Paso.

Interesting white-men-fricking-things-up history.
