Kansas City BBQ

Kansas City has always been a bucket list trip for me because I love bbq. I’m going to be in KC for a day and a half next month and want some recommendations on best spots. I know of the ones that are popular but are they worth it? Any hidden gems? Thanks in advance

Man I was really disappointed in KC BBQ. I thought there would be great steaks and BBQ everywhere and there just wasn’t.
With that said, the best BBQ I had there was from Jack Stack BBQ. Go to the Freight House location.

I'm not trying to be that guy, but having been to a few places I wouldn't get your expectations too high. Maybe it just isn't my style though.

I’m from there and Arthur Bryant’s is my choice but it is almost acquired taste.
It from 1920 and is one of a kind. Gates is also good but varies by location.
103 rd street is the best one followed by Brooklin, ( close to aurthur Bryant’s . For AB get the combo beef and pork , original sauce, fries, (lard fried) and a draft Bud. Hard to finish. They have modern places like Q39 and have heard good things about them but just never went. I used to live down the street from the original Jack Stack and their beans and BBQ chicken were what sold there the best. (Used to be smoke stack)

I went to Q39 a few weeks ago and think the ribs were the best I've ever had. The wings were really good also.
Betty Rae's ice cream in KC is really good.

Q39 and Joe's Kansas City(Oklahoma Joe's) are both great. I've also heard good things about Arthur Bryant's but I haven't been. Don't waste your time at Jack Stack's.

Joes KC is some of the worst BBQ I’ve ever had anywhere. It was not good. I had it at both the gas station location and the Olathe location and both times it was sub par.

I absolutely agree. Their steaks weren’t great either. Majestic was just meh. I had a much better steak and meal at 801 Chophouse there which is a chain.

I’ve lived here for 7 years and I’m a Texan. Here are my top places.
Harp BBQ - best in the city. Texas style brisket and sausage.
Q39 - consistently good. Ribs are good.
Meat Mitch - new place, not far from my house so we go often.
Joes - the original location but any are good.
Jack Stack - good Q great sides
SLAPS - great ribs.
Make sure to visit Boulevard Brewing if you have time. There are some great cocktail bars here too.
Let me know if you have any other questions. Depends a lot on where you are staying.

The pictures I’ve seen of their brisket at most places is sliced thin. Nobody can ever top Texas brisket. So I’m already certain I won’t be getting brisket. I’ve had Memphis bbq, Texas bbq, South Carolina bbq, and NC bbq. The only place that’s known for bbq that I haven’t been is KC.

LC’s is the spot suggested by a local last week. Built-in pit visible from the dining room. I got rib tips and baked beans. It was good but be prepared for heavy sauce. Out of respect for my Texas roots I passed on the brisket.

We went to slaps when we were there for the packer game and it was good. Went to the bar with video games right by there after.

The only place I went to when I was there was slaps. I got turkey, sausage, ribs, brisket, and burnt ends. Ironically, the brisket and burnt ends were the weakest of the group.

You are missing St. Louis. St. Louis BBQ > KC BBQ. KC BBQ uses that super thick and sweet sauce. St. Louis is similar except they thin the sauce out and cut the sweetness by using vinegar.

Oklahoma Joe's has the best baby back ribs ever. KC BBQ isn't known for their brisket, go to TX for that. I didnt really like Arthur Bryant's I thought it was overrated.

I had that once in their gas station location. Outstanding meal.
Q39 is very good, and had Andy Reid in there for lunch. He's not going to eat bad BBQ.
