What should I do or check out while I’m there? Best food? Bar?

I spent a year and a half commuting down there each week, though my last trip was in 2019 so take this with a grain of salt.

1. The riverwalk is just ok, lots of tourists traps and honestly I don't understand the draw. Though there are a few good bars tucked away in here (Esquire Tavern/Downstairs, Boudro's)
2. The Alamo is cool from the history aspect but the place is tiny, you can walk by it just to say you've been.
3. The Pearl District has lots of cool bars and restaurants and is out on the east side of downtown. (Supper, Boiler House, Down on Grayson)
4. La Cantera/The RIM area has a few good restaurants and bars sprinkled amongst the chains George's Keep at the Elian, The Rustic)

Honestly I'm not a big fan of the city, though that may have as much to do with work as it does SATX itself

Perfect, thanks. Is the pearl district like a hipster spot?

It was more upscale than hipster when I was going. Lots of bars and restaurants with a few breweries

TLDR: If you're not being paid to go there, don't go there.

Definitely recommend The Pearl for some restaurants. Southerleigh is one of my favorites.

Lol it’s not that bad. The area has developed and improved significantly the last few years.

Downtown is generally overrated. I’d say stop by the Alamo if you have never seen it. The riverwalk at night is also worth seeing if you’ve never been. During the week won’t be so tourist heavy either. The Pearl ( near downtown ) is nice area to walk around / eat. If you travel up 1-10 you can visit the Rim/ La Cantera shops. This is closer to my neck of the woods. Several good choices for food. Very nice upscale, clean environment. For food I’d recommend North Italia, Southerlieigh, or Piatti. Gloria’s is a decent choice for Mexican food.
If you drive another 20 minutes up 1-10 from here, you can visit Boerne, my town. It’s getting into the hill country and downtown has a cool vibe. Old school Texas/German town. Great craft beer and from scratch kitchens. Also, if you are an active guy, I’d highly recommend taking an hour or so for a hike. We have some great nature parks here. Check out Roosevelt or Friedrich park.

Of all the places in San Antonio, Gloria's is what you give the guy? Yikes...

Grab a pint or two at Waxy O'Connor's on the river walk. Place has a great vibe.

1. Rosario's.

2. LaFonda, LaFogata, Los Barrios

3. Mi Tierra, La Margarita

Casa Rio, Alamo Cafe

Pretty much your best food is not on the Riverwalk. The Riverwalk looks cool, but is very touristy and crowded. There are a few fun bars, but lots of people. The Pearl area is much better.

First time going there?

If so, then I don't agree with this:

If you're a regular or live in SA, then yes, it loses its appeal. But for a first time visit, it's a nice setup. Plenty of bars & restaurants. As someone else mentioned, it has a good vibe. For a one off visit, there is nothing wrong with barhopping up & down the Riverwalk. I would recommend. Edit: food will be hit or miss. You'd be going here for the ambience, not because it has the best food.

I do agree with this. You won't get as good of scenery as the Riverwalk nor as many options on where to settle down for bite/drink. But it's legit. The food is better here than the Riverwalk.
