It was a bit much for Merrifield to process in that situation. He’s a freshman inserted as a pinch runner to win the game on a hit. Odds of him going in that situation where the ball was hit were way higher than him sitting tight.

Not only is Merrifield a JUCO transfer, this is his second year in the program.

Guess I'm late to the party. But all the Merrifield is "only a freshman" stuff is a joke, right?

have a feeling I’m going to regret this but what is JML?

Drizz gave you the inside scoop, I'll just reiterate that he usually does the set- up for the game thread including the lineups for both teams, cool graphics ,and contributes meaningful content along several others you will learn. Cheer is the Man... he does the BPB ( story just means pbp) but awesome at it and JML Pinch hits like drizz said. Project writes up our weekly previews for conference series ( as long as we continue to participate j/k)~ hint...dont ask how to stream a game

Still, he took a chance to win the game right there, he ended up being wrong, no biggie

Credit for playing a great game and getting the W. Forget about who is throwing what pitch when for Tigers. Same could be sworn about them but ultimately outfield hustle & better hitting = 6-5 W for same team that 10 run ruled loss 3 weeks ago. Colonels aren’t trash. Winning record overall and conference but LSU questionable #1. Upcoming weekend series will determine if that holds.

Exactly. He is full of shite. It was a bang bang play. The die was cast when he didn't do the right thing at contact which was to make sure any hit ball isn't caught before committing to running. Again, he made a mental error by being too aggressive. What's wild is HIS mental error kept Frey from looking like a moron for not tagging.

End of the night, it sucks to lose but if it prevents the same thing from happening when it counts, it was a blessing.

He read it as a drop. Then took off. His read would have been right 95% of the time and he scores the winning run.

How can he read it as a drop when he had his back to the play as you said earlier?

I just watched it again, he was running to 3rd and looking over his left shoulder

He had no idea what he was doing

He saw the ball off the bat, paused for a second to see it, and, thinking it would fall safely, took off again. You can tell he was t running on contact.

I was wrong on this. Just watched the replay and Frey was heading back to third and was out of the frame when the ball was in the air. He was easily back on third tagging when the ball was caught.

Yeah, this is correct. He saw the ball and definitely hesitated. He then just made a bone head play and turned to third instead of freezing. If he freezes halfway, he gets back to second as the pitcher on the mound was the closest player to second base. He also likely scores in this scenario if the ball drops as its going to roll into the outfield.

Jesus, I feel like I just dissected the zapruder field over a mid-week game.

Difficult game for us as it was winnable but ended on yet another great and surprising defensive play by their infielder, and then we just fell apart on the base paths.

That ball touches down and it's over, we win, but the baseball gods ruled otherwise tonight so that's just the way it goes.

Damn ....

THIS.

Merrifield's bad decision made Frey's bad decision irrelevant, but in reality, Frey not tagging was much worse.

No. I think Frey is probably a poor baserunner. It looked like he didn't read the ball in the dirt at all on the previous AB.

But, getting doubled off is way worse than the mistake not to tag.

There's no situation where it makes sense to guess. He didn't read the ball and then go (mistakenly). He didn't read it at all...like he thought there were 2 outs.
