Not that I ever want to side with Netflix, but why are they required to portray historical figures as racially accurate?
I certainly understand that the casting director would prefer to be accurate, but it shouldn't be mandatory.

I don't know of any legal requirement. They have artistic license and 1st Amendment rights to do what they want.

Our job is to ridicule and laugh at them.

They aren't required to do anything...at least in the US. That said, the show is not presented as a work of fiction. It's presented as a factual documentary. Ergo, don't you thin the "facts" should be as accurate as possible to be considered a credible work?

As was alluded to in the video posted above, there is no "requirement" that a black actor portray a non-fictional person such as MLK. But would you put any sort of credibility into a biography of MLK with Ryan Gosling playing the role of MLK? As best, people of all races would laugh at such as being ridiculous. More likely, you would have countless "advocacy groups" and the media shuddering in outrage that a white man was portraying a black historical figure and demanding its immediate removal from society. Yet, that is exactly what is happening here.

Good point. Another is that isn’t it cultural appropriation when the Anglo Netflix controls the historical record (or at least depiction) of ancient Egypt?

And, BTW, it hardly matters that Cleo was of Greek descent. Even if she had been Egyptian, she would not have been Nubian. The Nubians were just slaves to the Egyptians.

Okay. I'm sure this would be considered completely acceptable.

Its the dishonesty.

Also they would say representation matters! as if no black person had been in a film prior to 2023. They are actively pushing division by race. And black people think they are the gatekeepers of everything now.

If it is based on perceived factual history then it should depict the historical characters as accurately as possible.

Their would be an uproar if MLK was portrayed by a Hispanic, Asian, or white man.

would you still say this if Nicolas Cage was given the role to play Malcolm X or MLK in a movie?

and be honest

and before you even try to claim its different, those examples are exactly the same thing they did here
